Event Organiser - Gary Chapman

Venue: West Lane Baptist Church, BD22 8EN   Presentation: 7pm to 8pm (Haworth Hobble race registration open 6pm to 7pm and then 8pm to 9pm at this venue)

Many know Gary from his 7 Spine Race finishes (6 in winter) and since 2020 as Race Director for the Haworth Hobble which hopefully most presentation attendees will be racing, spectating or volunteering. The presentation is about Gary's quest over the last 2 years to race at the extremes and complete 4 ultra marathons between 140 to 160 miles each thereby becoming one of the first people to finish the BTU Global Series. The races were each held over 5 stages in extreme environments.

The races are designed to test competitors physically and mentally along with their vital  'race admin'. Competitors carry all sleeping gear, food, safety and medical equipment so quite a weight.  The presentation covers:

  • Ice Ultra - Above the Arctic Circle and when in an unexpected blizzard crossing a mountain plateau,  temperatures hit minus 40 and over 25% of competitors pressed their emergency rescue button as feared for their lives ending with multiple competitors in hospital.
  • Desert Ultra - 160 miles of searing heat crossing Namibian desert with the last 3 days of race all exceeding 50 degrees celsius. The final 60 mile stage in 51 degree heat included a competitor getting attacked by a baboon and fresh desert lion footprints on the race route.
  • Mountains Ultra - racing high in the Tian Shan mountains of Kyrgyzstan in remote valleys and crossing high mountain passes as the thin air at 13,000 feet hit the competitors directly in the lungs.
  • Jungle Ultra - racing through thick Amazon jungle and wading down rivers and through swamps whilst the humidity was constantly at 100%. Sleeping in hammocks and wherever you looked things were trying to bite you.

The talk will have lots of video, photos and hopefully fascinating stories of what went on during the races.

The venue costs are covered by KCAC and 100% of the proceeds will be going to Calder Valley Search & Rescue Team,  our local mountain rescue team.

The presentation will finish at 8pm and it will have a Questions and Answer session for last 10 minutes. It's a great venue with big screen and good sound system as also used as Haworth cinema.
