The Lakeland LDWA (Long Distance Walkers Association) group are putting on a brand new 50 mile challenge event, Spring in Lakeland 50. This event will be running alongside our extremely popular Spring in Lakeland 24. Offering two fantastic distances, the event will have a new HQ located in the picturesque Cumbrian village of Coniston.

  • 24 miles (loop 1) or 50 miles (loops 1 & 2) from Coniston. It is not possible to just do loop 2.
  • Runners and walkers welcome.
  • Start time 08.00 for walkers and 10:00 for runners. All to finish loop 1 (24 miles) by 17.30 on Saturday. Anybody doing loop 2 (50 miles) must finish by 8:00 on Sunday morning. Appropriate cut off times may apply at other checkpoints.
  • Maps OL 6&7. Navigational skills required, although a GPX and route description will be provided.
  • Minimum age on the 50 mile event is 18. We will accept entrants aged 16 and 17 on the 24 mile loop provided they are walking with a parent or guardian and are LDWA members.

Both the 24 and 50 mile routes will start from the John Ruskin School in Coniston, where free parking is available as a part of your entry. Camping and showers will also be available at the school on the Saturday night for anybody on the 50 mile event.

For 2027 our traditional Spring in Lakeland 24 event has been slightly revamped and after leaving Coniston the route snakes through spectacular scenery to Ambleside via the Cumbria Way, Tarn Hows and Oxen Fell. From Ambleside you’ll head along Loughrigg Terrace passing Loughrigg Tarn, Elterwater and Slater Bridge in the beautiful Langdale Valley, before a tough climb takes you from Tilberthwaite back into Coniston via the Coniston Fells.

For those taking on the new Spring in Lakeland 50 you’ll walk the route as above, but once back in Coniston you’ll head out on trails that lead you somewhere very special - the lesser known Duddon Valley. Nestled between the Coniston Fells and the Cumbrian Coast the Duddon Valley is like stepping back in time, with plenty of Lakeland hills to keep you entertained. After the tough climb up to Walna Scar you’ll be rewarded with views as far as the coast, before snaking through valleys where your backdrop is Scafell Pike. After visiting Broughton in Furness, you’ll pick up the old railway line for a bit of respite from the hills, before heading through picturesque villages to Beacon Tarn and another section the Cumbria Way. You’ll finally make your way back to Coniston via Torver Common and the shores of Coniston Water.

Regrettably we can't allow dogs on this event, as it is peak lambing time in the Lakes.

Please note that exact details relating to checkpoint closing times, mandatory kit, general organisation and catering will all be subject to final confirmation nearer the event date.

Event Rules:  Throughout the event all entrants must carry or wear, as appropriate, the following: Route description; maps as above (paper or electronic format); compass; whistle; emergency food and drink; waterproof and windproof upper clothing and trousers. Additionally anybody doing the 50 mile route must carry a torch with spare batteries and a reflective marker or light on the back of their rucksack.

Both the 24 and 50 mile routes will be going up to 400 metres when you cross the pass before Coniston and on the 50 mile route will go 600 over meters on the Walna Scar Road.  On a wet or windy day it can be very cold in April so remember those spare layers and gloves and hats.

Safety:  Entrants must follow the route, checking in at all checkpoints.  Anyone planning to retire must do so at a checkpoint. All starters including any who have retired must report in to the finish. LDWA marshals are authorised to short route or retire anyone failing to comply with the event rules or who in their opinion is unfit to continue. Entrants on the 50 will be required to carry a GPS tracker provided by the organisers.

LDWA membership: Please note that entries will initially be open to LDWA members only. Entries will be opened to non-members on 1st December 2026. You can now join the LDWA via SiEntries and receive the cheaper member's rate. If doing this then please join the LDWA first, as you will then be issued with an LDWA Membership number. Please then come back and enter this event and quoting your new membership number to get the member's discount.
