44th South Shropshire Circular

The 44th South Shropshire Circular will start and finish at the Oswestry Memorial Hall  Smithfield St,  Oswestry SY11 2EG (GR SJ290294). Mass start in nearby Cae Glas Park (4 minutes walk from check in). No early or late starts allowed. 

There is a large public carpark by the Memorial Hall which you will need to pay to use so we encourage you to share lifts (Oswestry Central Car Park Oswestry Town Council Car Parks | Oswestry Town Council). The car park takes cash and cards but can also be booked in advance to save time in the morning - see link on council website. Prices are on the council website. 

A challenging 26 mile route with about 3380ft of ascent over scenic and testing countryside with a 10 hour time limit.

This Event Requires Basic Map and Compass Skills. As always, a different route to previous years. The route will not be given out until the morning of the event without exception.

The route description will enable the route to be plotted on the required OS Explorer 240 (Oswestry/Croesowalt) map at 1:25 000 . The route description will not be sufficient to navigate the route on its own, participants should use basic map and compass skills to plot the route on the map and use this to navigate the route.

Entrants are welcome to use GPS devices however GPX coordinates/files will not be issued. The coordinates provided in the route description are unlikely to be sufficient on their own to plot the proposed route on a GPS device. They should carry a paper map as a backup.

We will welcome you in the hall from 06:45 for registration, a simple breakfast and issue of the Route Description. The route will be divided into 4 legs with 3 serviced check points providing refreshments (one basic and two with toilets, hot drinks & food). 

There will be a briefing at 07:45 and a mass start at 08:00 from nearby Cae Glas Park (4 minute walk away). You should be comfortable taking part in a mass start event, early starters will not be allowed . Hot food, hot drinks and a fine certificate will greet your return to Oswestry.

No dogs are to be brought on this event.

We are also not able to accept entries from anyone under 18.

Full refund less SI administrative costs until 30th January 2027, thereafter at the discretion of the organiser.

Clothing and equipment : For comfort and safety, you must wear or carry all of the items listed below and you will be disqualified either before or after the START, if any of them are obviously missing.

• Mug (there will be no cups at checkpoints)
• Walking boots or event/fell running shoes with sound well-studded soles.
• Complete body and leg covering (running shorts with tights are OK).
• Wind and waterproof outer protection shell, comprising a jacket and over-trousers.
• Spare inner garment (such as a fleece jacket).
• Hat and gloves    
• Survival bag     
• Emergency food and drink
• Torch    
• Basic First Aid    
• Compass and whistle.
