The Borders has a murky history of kilted scallywags and hooded outlaws stretching back through the swirling mists of time. For centuries, three main activities kept the police, bailiffs and landowners on their toes – poaching, sheep-stealing and smuggling.
The Border Reiver Trail Series commemorates this rich tradition with three separate races: The Poacher, The Raider and The Smuggler. First off is The Poacher – a gorgeous 10km loops along the banks of the River Teviot, starting and finishing at the Showground in Kelso and crossing the river under the historic Roxburgh viaduct. The outward leg climbs through lovely deciduous woodland to the old former railway (now a popular walking / running trail) which it follows to the viaduct. The return leg takes you on a small fisherman’s path just a few feet from the water’s edge all the way back to Kelso. Herons, ducks, badgers, deer, swans, foxes and all manner of wildlife can be spotted along the route.
Probably not one for setting a PB, but who wants to go fast when the views are as great as this?!
Organised by the Border Search and Rescue Unit (BSARU).
