This is an Introduction session to Wild Swimming in the Lake District. It starts at the beautiful Fell Foot Park at the bottom of Windermere and involves a swim down the lake towards the river Kent. Previous swimmers who have taken a guided swim are always amazed at the scenery and wildlife. If you are really lucky, you might also see the old steam train pass through the trees at the side of the lake on it journey to Lakeside – quite an impressive sight!
Our plan for the day after a quick introduction & briefing and of course a hot drink, is to walk to our Wild Swim spot in the meadow at Fell Foot park (about a 7 min walk from the Gazebo). You will require a pair of comfortable shoes you can walk in trainers or similar – it is mostly grass & flat. Also a rucksack will be helpful to carry your swim equipment in, wetsuit, towels etc & clothes to put in whilst swim.
Once at our Wild Swim spot, we will get suited & booted in our wetsuits. Once everyone is ready, we will enter the water & acclimatise to the temperature before embarking on our beautiful swim adventure. I am hoping we will see the steam train,as it passes and for our last wild swim session, we even saw 10 ducklings and some swans. We will certainly take in some incredible views & we might even see some other wildlife.
We will be looking to cover in the region of 800 – 1000m over the morning. There will also be an option for some swimmers to do less distance than this and enjoy more of a localised swim if they wish to.
Standard: Beginner to intermediate (breastroke swimmers are fine) - need to be able to swim 800m in a pool.
We have just 12 places on the session. Wetsuit hire (sorry only limited sizes) & use of tow floats included (please feel free to bring your own if have one) within the cost if needed, free swim cap included too.
The water will be quite chilly at the start of May, but we do get some lovely sunny weather at the start of May so can warm up quite quickly by mid May. Due the water being well below 16 degrees swimmers will need to wear a wetsuit and need a tow float.
Session run: 09.00- 11.30 (approx. finish time)
