Penrith Beacon Night event 5th Feb 2022 Final Details (a NWNL event)

Directions / Parking

There will be no road signs. Competitors should travel along Beacon Edge to the junction with a minor road signposted Roundthorn Hotel (NY533307). Travel north uphill past the entrance to the Roundthorn, and park tidily on western side of the road taking care not to block the road for through traffic.

If parked cars have reached the entrance to the Roundthorn Hotel, please do not park on the minor road but return to the junction with Beacon Edge and park tidily on the north side of Beacon Edge.

Enquiries, download, start and finish will all be within 50m of the eastern gate to the Beacon (NY 534312)

If you have travelled to the event alone, please will you leave your car keys in a box at download for safety reasons.

Start, finish and download

There is one start for all courses, at the forest gate.

Start times will run from 1800 until 1900. The start will close at 1900.

The start will be run on a first-come-first-served basis. Most entrants have asked for an early start, but the usual stagger may mean you have to wait several minutes for a start slot. Please be dressed appropriately for this. If necessary clothing can be left at the start/finish at your own risk.

At the start you will be asked to show your whistle, spare light and mobile phone.
The 90m route from the start to the start kite will be marked.

Finish is very close to both the start and the access gate. Courses close at 21:00 (you must be back at this time) – if you think your course may take you a long time, please make sure you have an early start.
Anyone not back at download by 21:00 may trigger a search and/or mountain rescue being called out. Please don’t do this!

Course details

Blue 4.7km, 110m climb

Green 3.3km, 90m

Orange 2.7km, 50m

Important safety information

You must report to download, even if you do not complete your course.

Please remember that orienteering is an adventure sport and you take part at your own risk and are responsible for your own safety during the event. British Orienteering provides Public Liability insurance cover for all individuals taking part in our Organised Events and Activities.

With this event taking place in winter, all competitors are strongly advised to carry minimum kit. In the case of a competitor injury or incident that prevents you from completing your course, your chances of developing hypothermia will be greatly reduced.

We would recommend reading the information leaflet on hypothermia produced by the Fell Runners Associationhttps://fellrunner.org.uk/documents/2021/FRA_hypothermia.pdf

All competitors are asked to carry the following kit whilst competing, not just to the start:

  • Waterproof jacket with taped seams and integrated hood

  • Warm hat

  • Whistle

  • Fully-charged headtorch and back-up torch

  • Fully-charged mobile phone in a waterproof bag or case

If you suffer a minor injury and are unable to proceed to first aid point, the emergency phone number for the evening is the organiser’s and is printed on the event map. If you suffer a serious injury, please dial 112 or 999 and ask for police and then mountain rescue. You must ask them to contact the organiser on the number printed on the event maps as soon as possible.

If you are not carrying a mobile phone and need assistance, please use your whistle – 6 blasts every minute (the reply is 3 long blasts). Keep blowing until assistance arrives at your location.

There will be first aiders available, based at the download area very close to start/finish.

Covid-19 Considerations: Please keep to the British Orienteering Covid code of conduct.
Before attending any orienteering activity all participants should self-assess for Covid-19 symptoms which include: a high temperature; a new continuous cough; and a loss of, or change to, their sense of taste or smell.
If you, or anyone you live with, has one or more of these symptoms, however mild, you should not attend the event.

Similarly if you have been informed that you need to self-isolate, then you must not attend the event.

In any case, please try to:

  1. Maintain social distancing at all times

  2. Only speak with event officials if absolutely necessary.

  3. Minimise the amount of time spent in close proximity to others.

  4. Respect other people's personal space.

  5. Observe any local and national covid guidelines when travelling to and from the event.

Terrain Description

Map

Map by ISOM 2017-2, updated Jan 22. The map scale for all courses is 1:7500 5m contours

Many minor paths, deer tracks and mountain bike routes are not marked on the map. Only those obvious at night have been mapped. Fence crossing points are clearly marked.

Large rhododendron bushes that are distinctive in the night terrain and are larger than 3m in diameter have been mapped. However small holly trees and smaller rhododendron bushes, whilst possibly appearing similar at night at first glance, have not been mapped. If a bush is on the map you may be certain that it will be clearly visible at night.

The Emergency bearing in almost all circumstances is to head north until you reach a clear wide track. Then follow the track east to start/finish. Towards the end of all courses heading north leads to a minor path running alongside a wall which can then be followed east to start/finish

Terrain

Penrith Beacon is a sandstone escarpment with an extensive path network. The central area is heather-clad and offers variable running. Faster areas and indistinct animal tracks alternate with slower areas of deep heather or dead bracken.

There are many old quarried areas, some of which contain crags and other rock features. None of these features will be taped.

All courses have been planned so that the optimum route avoids all quarries. However, since it is just possible that you might not be on the optimum route, keep a sharp lookout for steep-sided, possibly overgrown hollows.
