This race starts at the bottom of Stock Ghyll lane (behind the Salutation Hotel) GR 337044 and finishes slightly further up the road than this at the layby of the old Kelsick school. An out-and-back route, this race starts with an unforgiving short, sharp ascent of Stock Ghyll Lane (which is actually a tarmacked road) to the fell gate/ stile. A runnable section to a 2nd gate leads on to a thigh burning section of steep stone steps which head directly upwards. A short section of open fell follows, over rough grass and onwards to the rocky summit. Please follow the flagged route to the summit and then away from the summit. The summit is the only check point and although runners can take their own preferred route, most competitors descend to the R of the main path as you're looking down the fell, crossing back onto the main path near the bottom.
Although short and sweet this race should not be underestimated. The route is very steep and extremely rough underfoot. Slippery, wet conditions can make the descent treacherous and if the mist is down the ability to navigate is essential. Please also be aware that the road section at the beginning and end will not be closed to cars although it will be marshalled. Runners must take great caution especially when descending at speed and negotiating blind corners.
Please bring your full FRA kit to registration with you. Kit will be checked before registration. No kit; no race. It should also go without saying that rudeness regarding kit to the RO or any volunteers checking kit is unacceptable.
Please note that Ambleside AC do not allow the use of certain GPS functions for navigation in their races, in line with FRA rules.

Registration at Ambleside Parish Centre between 10am -11.30am. There is a 10 min walk to the start behind the Salutation hotel in the town centre. A final head count and random kit check will take place there.
Prize giving if dry will take place outside the Parish Centre by the stone steps in the car park. If the weather is too wet to do prizegiving outside, prizes will be posted out to runners.
Toilets are available in the Parish Centre but please do not wear fell shoes inside; leave them at the door for the sake of the floor!
Parking – please do not park in the Parish Centre car park. When parking locally, please be considerate.
CANCELLATION PROCEDURE
This race will be cancelled if the organiser considers conditions to be too dangerous for the summit marshals / competitors. Road closure due to snow or floods may also necessitate a cancellation or postponement of the race (as has been done in the past). Notices will be put on the Ambleside AC website before 9am on the day of the race if it is cancelled. Please check before driving.
