Lets Run Adventures are planning a recce of the second half of the Lyke Wake Crossing. This is the part of the route most runners have had trouble navigating. Starting from The Lion Inn on Blakey Ridge you will take in White Cross (Fat Betty), Shunner Howe, Hamer, see the parish boundary stone Blue Man-i'-th'-Moss, Wheeldale Stepping Stones, Fen Bogs, Eller Beck, Lilla Howe, Jugger Howe ravine, Stony Marl Moor, and finish in Ravenscar.
The original concept coming from Bill Cowley who put together the 40 mile walking route across the North Yorkshire Moors in 1955.
Today the route can be tackled in either west to east or east to west directions. The most common being the race route of west to east from Osmotherley to Ravenscar. It is called the Lyke Wake because the ancient people who inhabited the area carried their dead across the moors to the burial grounds there. On route you will see many burial mounds, hence the coffin badge!
It is generally considered to be a challenge as you cross the moors, ascending high ridges then into valleys; we reach a height of 454m and run as low as 169m.
We will cross the moors, stopping at 3 checkpoints on route for food and drinks. You will pass landmarks such as the standing stones called ‘Fat Betty’ and Blue Man-i'-th'-Moss as well as crossing an old Roman road.
We will be putting on a bus from Ravenscar (the finish) leaving at 8am to transport runners back to the start at the Lion Inn if they wish to leave their cars at the finish. The bus will be at a cost of £10 per person.
Mandatory Equipment to be carried is as follows:
It is suggested that you have the OS Locate and What3words Apps downloaded onto your phone.
Each participant will sign to say that they have the mandatory kit, remember this is a remote event and the kit list is the minimum you should be carrying.
Dogs welcome on leads.
