Every year, the picturesque Scottish Highland villages of Poolewe and Aultbea, along with the surrounding country estates, play host to one of Scotland's most gruelling endurance sporting events for charity. The Great Wilderness Challenge more than aptly lives up to its name.

This year we are proud to have been invited to rebrand our event to celebrate Her Majesty The Queen's Platinum Jubilee.  We are delighted to be part of this momentous occasion and are also pleased to be returning the event to Poolewe after a 2 year absence.

It features a variety of walks and runs in the Fisherfield-Letterewe area of Wester Ross, an iconic area with arguably the most dramatic mountain scenery in Scotland. It is a friendly event renowned for its hospitality, camaraderie and inclusivity, enjoyed by around 500-600 participants each year. In addition to the routes already mentioned there are also two short low-level walks which cater for walkers with limited mobility.  Primarily a charity fund raising event the GWC has raised over £4.2 million for Healthcare charities since inception in 1986.

HARD as you want – or EASY as you want! - the inclusive nature of our event means there is something to suit every taste or range of fitness and ability. From the arduous 25 mile route from Dundonnell to Poolewe for the insanely fit, to the less challenging but equally scenic 13 mile,  7 mile  and 10k routes, to the low level limited mobility walks, the choice abounds.

Entry Fee Includes

  • Refreshments en route and on return to Poolewe Hall after completion of the event
  • Finishers Medal
  • Complimentary T-shirt

Routes available:

1.4 mile Limited Mobility Walk Poolewe

Entry fees are non refundable.

In the event of cancellation entry fees will be donated to our nominated charities.

All sponsorship raised by participants will be split between our nominated charities.  We regret we are unable to allow participants to raise money for any other charities of their own choice. We are a registered charity and all sponsorship must be paid directly to us NOT to the charities we support.

VIRTUAL OPTION: Following on from the huge success of last year’s virtual GWC we are also pleased to offer the opportunity to take part in a 'virtual' version this year, giving participants the flexibility to take on their own personal challenge - any distance, any where, any form of exercise and at your own pace - all at a time of your own choosing. Entry to this event is £15 per adult, £10 for 12 -17 year olds, Children under 12 free of charge.  Entry fee includes complimentary t-shirt and finishers medal which will be sent out on receipt of proof of event completion.
