Saturday August 21st 2021 will see Ellesmere host the second running of the Shropshire Way Ultra. With the start/finish line being on the banks of The Mere, runners will initially run along the shoreline, before heading away to complete an approximately 7-mile loop back to the start/finish area. Here, the first of four feed stations will be stocked full of all the essentials. A selection of food will be available to keep you going as well as hydration fluid and water on tap for bottle re-fills. From there, the longest leg of the race will take runners South-West to Llanymynech along the Shropshire Union and Montgommery Canal towpaths. Count off the bridges as you make your way along a net-downhill section of the route with some fantastic views. Half way will be feed station number 2.
Leaving the pretty town of Llanymynech (and feed station no. 3), runners will head North to the rolling hills of Oswestry Racecourse. Here’s where the majority of the elevation gain can be found, but also some stunning vistas of the Shropshire countryside. Past the half way point now, runners will find feed station number 4 and notice that the distance run is now into “Ultra” territory. Descending to Chirk Bank, runners will find the final feed station and then once again pick up the Shropshire Union Canal for the final run in to Ellesmere and the finish line.
We are always looking for volunteers to help make the race possible. If you are interested, fill out the form at shropshirewayultra.run/volunteer
