Social distancing has given us a once in a lifetime opportunity to race over the iconic National Three Peaks from the comfort of our own home.  As an individual, or as a team of two, three, four five or six, you will climb a total of 3408m, being the combined height of Ben Nevis, Snowdon and Scafell Pike (obviously you have to descend that far also!).

UTC South Durham, a STEM-focused school and sixth form for 14-19 year olds with a strong technical and academic focus, are currently producing PPE visors to be donated to key workers.  We have had orders for thousands of visors, and are currently scaling up production to meet demand.  All proceeds from this event will go towards visor production, with any surplus being donated to other charities closely linked to supporting individuals affected by Covid-19.

Times and repetition count will be self-recorded and submitted following the event through SiEntries. You will have to measure the height of your staircase (vertical height, not diagonal), record the time taken (including rests!), and count the number of repetitions.  I suggest using 2 methods of counting, the lap button on your watch, a counter app, or a pen and paper tally chart as back up.

An average runner should  be able to complete the event solo in around 5-7 hours, as a team of 3 each individual will be climbing for around 2 hours, as a team of 6 it will be around 1 hour each. Teams can be in the same house, or in different locations.  Entry fees are structured to encourage maximum participation.

PDF certificates will be sent via email to all completing participants following the event.  Special certificates will be sent to 1st, 2nd, 3rd placed Male & Female in the Open, 40+, 50+, 60+, 70+ and 80+ categories, also 1st, 2nd, 3rd Male/Female/Mixed Team of 3 and 6 will all receive special certificates recognising their achievement. - Edit, a fastest family category has been added on request.

The visors cost around 50p each to manufacture, so a £20 entry fee is enough to produce around 40 visors to protect 40 key workers from infection.

It is amazing that you have donated your money to enter this event.  We hope that we can multipy this amount by 10 if we all share a sponsorship link with our friends/workmates/family.  Due to the way UTC is registered with justgiving you can't create individual fundraising pages but this link will pool all the donations related to this challenge.

Start at any time on Monday.  Submit results (total time, total reps) by the end of Wednesday 15th April by editing your entry on SI Entries.

Where teams are in the same house, they may run alternatively eg, RunnerA x1, RunnerB x1, RunnerC x1, RunnerA x1, Runner B x1 etc.  Or in Blocks, Runner A x 100 then Runner B x 100 etc, or any combination of the above.  Time is recorded from when the first runner starts his first rep to when the last runner finishes their last rep.  Where runners are in different houses, time is recorded for each runner from the start of their first rep to the end of their last rep, total time for all runners is then added.

If the amount of entry fee presents a barrier to your participation then please contact me and we can agree a route to your participation.
