Due to the current COVID-19 situation, there is currently uncertaintity about whether this event will go ahead as planned. We have therefore closed the event to new entries for the time being.

If you have already entered, the organiser will be in touch with you as soon as soon as a decision can be made.

The Calke Explorer is the last of the three main events at the Calke Outdoor Weekender (COW).  It is an orienteering type event where participants navigate their way to find a series of check points using a map.

Based on the meadow near the main house, and using the spectacular grounds of the spectacular Calke Abbey, participants will have up to 2 hours to complete the course, and prizes will be awarded for the quickest finishers.

Start times will be staggered so you can’t just follow the person(s) in front, but you can opt to team up with friends/family members.

On the ‘standard’ course, which is open to participants over 16 only, expect to cover between 5 and 6 miles (8 to 10 kilometres), or more depending on your route finding.

There is also a shorter ‘family’ course on which children (under 16) can take part for free (although Calke Park entry of £2.50 will still apply), accompanied by a parent/guardian; with a maximum of 2 children per adults allowed.  On this expect to cover around 2-miles / 3 kilometres.

The course will be open from 9am to 12:30, with the latest start time being 10:30.

Entry to the Calke Explorer event includes parking and general access to Calke Park, the garden and stables. Park entry fee will be deducted from the entry fee for National Trust members, but membership cards must be produced on the day.

As part of our environmental policy, t-shirts may be purchased as an optional extra - so they're not made for those that don't need one. Also, you do have the option of joining the National Forest 'Plant a Tree' scheme as an alternative or in addtion to a t-shirt.

Location: Calke Abbey, Ticknall, Derbyshire, DE73 7LE

Other events that form part of the Calke Outdoor Weekender (COW) are:

  • Saturday 16/05/20 The COW's Big Challenge (choose your distance: 40m ultra, marathon, half marathon, 6-miles or 3-miles)
