ABOUT THE EVENT
Taking inspiration from New York Tunnel 2 Towers, created by the Stephen Stiller Foundation, the Firefighting Fundraisers of South Wales Fire Service have partnered with New York to bring you the Cardiff Tunnel 2 Towers. This will take place on 22nd September 2019 at Cardiff Bay and is a 5k Charity walk/run for all to take part in, with all emergency services and armed forces in uniform and appliances from all services, providing fun and fitness for all the family.
The route is flat and is predominantly following the Cardiff Bay to Barrage area and back again.
A commemorative T-Shirt will also be presented as part of the event
On September 11, 2001, Stephen, who was assigned to Brooklyn’s Squad 1, had just finished his shift and was on his way to play golf with his brothers when he got word over his scanner of a plane hitting the North Tower of the World Trade Centre. Upon hearing the news, Stephen called his wife Sally and asked her to tell his brothers he would catch up with them later. He returned to Squad 1 to get his gear.
Stephen drove his truck to the entrance of the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel, but it had already been closed for security purposes. Determined to carry out his duty, he strapped 60 lbs. of gear to his back, and raced on foot through the tunnel to the Twin Towers, where he gave up his life while saving others.
A full morning of entertainment is planned for all the family to enjoy, with dance groups and DJ to keep the crowds entertained before and after the start.
Cardiff bay is home to many food, drink and entertainment venues as well as being set in a beautiful location.
Run or walk with your spouse, family or siblings. We have discounted family tickets so you can all enjoy.
This is not an officially timed event and no timing chips will be provided. For those wishing to time the event, we recommend using your own personal sports device.
