Broughton 2026 U16 U18 Route

The races will be marked and marshalled, and follow hill paths. The paths can get muddy in sections after rain so studded footwear is recommended.

RACE ENTRY

The Under 14, Under 16 and Under 18 races are pre-entry only (no entry on the day) via SI Entries: The race entry fee is £7.

The Under 12 race and Junior Fun Run is entry on the day only (by 11.45am) and costs £2 to enter. Adults may accompany those taking part in the Fun Run.

TRAVEL/PARKING/REGISTRATION/FACILITIES

Unfortunately, Broughton is not easy to access by public transport (the nearest regular bus services pass through Biggar and Peebles) so please share transport as much as possible.

Parking will be on the verge of the drive above and below Broughton Place Farm (ML12 6HJ). Please park as directed by the parking marshals (from 10.15am).

NOTE - The hill walker’s car park at the Shepherd’s Cottage is no longer in use, so anyone recceing the course before the event should park in the village. The village hall car park provides the most convenient parking – you can access the drive via the path in the field behind the hall and there’s a gate into the field from the car park.

Registration for all races (from 10.30am) will be in a gazebo next to the Shepherd’s Cottage, a maximum of 1km from the parking.

IMPORTANT – The Shepherd’s Cottage is a private residence and is strictly out of bounds.

There will be two Portaloos near registration. There are also public toilets in Broughton village, see the link below:

Broughton King George VI Park - Public toilets | Scottish Borders Council (scotborders.gov.uk)

The registration area is quite exposed if the weather is bad, so please bring appropriate clothing to keep warm/dry. There is a grassy area beyond the gate onto the hill where small tents/gazebos can be pitched. There will be limited supplies of water at the start/finish but please bring plenty water/refreshments of your own (especially if it’s a hot day!). Please leave the area tidy afterwards and take all rubbish home with you.

Race numbers will be provided but please bring your own pins.

SAFETY

The race is permitted by Scottishathletics and run under the UKA Rules for Fell/Hill Running. In Scotland, Scottishathletics permitted events follow the SHR safety rules and guidelines which can be viewed here:

SHR Safety Rules

All athletes in the Junior Races and Fun Run must bring waterproof long sleeve top and bottoms, hat and gloves, and must be prepared to carry them if the organizer specifies they must do so. IMPORTANT - Failure to comply with any minimum kit rule will result in disqualification.

Any athlete who retires from the race must report their retiral to the start/finish and/or registration teams.

We will have a first aid trained helper in attendance and a first aid kit. The nearest A&E departments are all approx. 50min drive away, at Edinburgh Infirmary, Wishaw General and St John’s Hospital in Livingston.

SCOTTISHATHLETICS JUNIOR HILL RUNNING CHAMPIONSHIPS

The Under 14, 16 & 18 races are hosting this year’s scottishathletics Junior Hill Running Championships. Medals will be awards to the first 3 Male/Non-Binary and Female finishers in each age category. In order to be eligible for the Championships, runners must be current members of scottishathletics.

INTERNATIONAL YOUTH CUP SELECTION RACE/JUNIOR LEAGUE

The Under 18 Race has been designated the 2026 International Youth Cup Selection Race. Only athletes born in 2009 and 2010, and who are members of scottishathletics, are eligible for selection.

The event is also hosting counter races for the Under 12, Under 14 Under 16 and Under 18 scottishathletics Junior Hill Running League (7 race series).

For full details of the Youth Cup selection policy, Junior Championship and Junior League, please see the scottishathletics International Handbook (note : The U12 category was listed in Scottish Championship section by mistake, it's League only):

IMPORTANT LIVESTOCK NOTICE - It is the lambing season so all dogs MUST be kept on a lead.

The race takes place in a valley where sheep graze. Competitors and spectators MUST keep any dogs on the lead at all times. Also, please take similar precautions if recceing the course in advance of race day.
