2026 marks half a century of this iconic event, promising a unique atmosphere for all participants as they follow in the footsteps of decades of hikers.
The Bullock Smithy Hike / Ultra 56, organised by 3rd Hazel Grove Scout Group, is a challenging 56-mile circular hike or ultra-run, starting and finishing in Hazel Grove.
Checkpoints - Hazel Grove > Bowstones > Chinley Churn > Edale Cross > Edale > Castleton (20:00Hrs) > Peak Forest (22:00hrs) > Millers Dale (00:00hrs) > Chelmorton > Earl Sterndale (02:30hrs) > Brand Top (04:30hrs) > Wildboarclough (06:45hrs) > Rainow (09:00hrs) > Whiteley Green (10:00hrs) > Hazel Grove. Checkpoint cut off times are shown in brackets
Entry Includes - Refreshments provided at checkpoints along the route, and upon finishing, participants are rewarded with a Full English breakfast, timed certificate and a unique 50th anniversary item. We will also be offering a commemorative keepsake, this will be available later in the year an additional cost
Equipment - the following is required to enter the event, we ask participants to sign to confirm they take responsibility for having these items;
- OL1 and OL24 maps. Digital alternatives are not a replacement for physical maps
- Compass, Whistle
- Torch & spare batteries
- High visibility jacket / reflective strips
- Waterproof Coat and Trousers
- Spare Jumper
- Emergency Rations
- Mug for checkpoint refreshments
- First Aid Kit & Foil Blanket
- OS Locate or What3Words downloaded on your phone.
Route - The course uses a combination of public footpaths, bridleways and roads. It is completely UNMARKED. You are expected to be able to navigate on course including the hours in darkness. It is therefore advantageous to recce (in daylight) the sections of the route that you will visit in darkness.
