This recce aims to cover much of the middle third of the LAW75 route, from Buckden to Mallerstang. Basically, we meet at Kirkby Stephen, take a minibus to Buckden* and #wabjab back.
The route climbs steadily out of Wharfedale and over towards Nappa Hall and then onto Askrigg, before turning West up Wensleydale and on to Hardraw and Cotterdale. The most magnificent section of Lady Anne's High Road past the Andy Goldsworthy sculptures at the head of the Eden Valley, leads to the run down to Pendragon Castle is a delight.
This part of the route will be done by many people in the dark, but hopefully under a stary sky. Overall, it's also the section which isn't served by public transport, hence us facilitating your adventure with a minibus.
What's not to like! Open to everyone, whether you are entered or not. It could also be possible to extend the recce from Buckden and aim for Kirkby Stephen and Winton, maybe?
Jump back in the bus here, if you've done enough or carry on to Kirkby Stephen, or even Winton. It all depends on how fast you move.
Minibus support throughout - drinks, nibbles if the wonderful Askrigg coffee shop isn't open -and the opportunity to do as much as you need or want to. Limited to 12 people.
Plentiful parking in Kirkby Stephen, which is easily accessible off the M6 via Tebay junction 38. Railway Station also at Kirkby Stephen (or Garsdale Head station pick up is also a possibility.)
*The first third, from Skipton to Buckden is basically up The Dales Way, and served by the local Dales Buses, especially on a weekend.
Kirkby Stephen to Appleby is a short hop on the iconic Settle-to-Carlisle line. This is why we are promoting LAW75 as a doable, green and sustainable event.
**The weather, and road conditions may have some bearing as to how we access the route.
