Navigation, hill and mountain skills for adults at any level.

Do you want the confidence to explore or race independently in the hills and mountains of the UK?

This practical, hands-on course will help you develop navigation techniques and a range of essential hill skills to keep you safe, efficient, and self-reliant in a mountain environment.

You’ll learn about route planning and selection, techniques for moving confidently over varied terrain, and how to continue developing your skills beyond the course.

The day is relaxed and supportive — it’s not about pace. Most of the day will be at walking speed, with optional sections for downhill or technical running if you wish. Expect regular pauses to study the landscape, compare it with the map, and practise navigation techniques. Be prepared for standing still at times — bring extra layers and perhaps a warm drink to stay comfortable.

This course is ideal for anyone with a reasonable level of fitness who wants to build confidence exploring the outdoors. It’s also perfect preparation for self-navigation events, adventure races, and mountain marathons.
All abilities are welcome — the location and structure allow for tailored instruction, so mixed-ability groups work really well. Whether you’re completely new to navigation or refining existing skills, you’ll find the right level of challenge.
