Welcome to The Governor Backyard Ultra 7-Hour Challenge!

The World's first and only Backyard Ultra based entirely inside the high walls of a prison.

Are you intrigued by the Backyard Ultra (BYU) format, but find the idea of a ‘last-person-standing’ competition overwhelming? The 7 Hour version of The Governor may be the perfect stepping stone into the world of Ultra Running. The rules for the 7 Hour challenge mirror those of the full BYU, with one difference – a pre-determined Ultra Marathon distance of 29.169 miles.
Prepare to challenge those doubts and join the Backyard running community in pushing your limits and embracing the test of endurance. Whether you're a seasoned runner, or taking your first leap into Ultra Marathons, The Governor BYU 7 Hour Challenge welcomes participants of all levels and backgrounds.

The Governor route mirrors that of the running track used by prisoners of yesteryear.

This event will run simultaneously with the main Governor Backyard Ultra, however our focus for this event will be encouragement to participate and the chance to immerse yourself in the BYU community, as well as offer a great training opportunity in an epic location.

Starting at 10:00, all participants will commence their first lap of the 4.167 mile course around the prison site. This will be repeated on the hour for a total of 7 hours. 

Anyone who is not able to complete the lap within the strict one-hour cut-off will be given the option to reduce the lap distance, in order to start the following lap at the start of the next hour.

All participants will receive one of our beautiful Scottish Oak medals made by our partner charity, The Workshop Aberfeldy.

Distance each hour: 4.167 Miles

Total Distance: 29.169 Miles

Ascent each hour: 164.6 Metres

Age Limit: 18 years & over

Entry Fee: £50.00 - £55.00

 Accommodation

• Please email info@hellfireevents.com if you would like more information regarding renting a prison cell for the night before the event.

Travel Information

• Registration will open at 08:00 at the reception office by the car park, The Citadel, Citadel Road, Dover CT17 9DR.
• Free parking on site – please follow any directional signage and information from wardens.
• There is a bus stop outside the Citadel for anyone arriving by public transport.  It is recommended that you check the times on Stagecoach
• The nearest train station is Dover Priory, which is 1 mile from the Citadel. It is recommended that you check the times on Southeastern Railway.
• Race safety briefings will be held at 09:40 on race day.
