About Àban

Àban is a Scottish outdoor education charity (SC051413) and award winning social enterprise.

We run Scotland's only independent DofE Open Award group and weekly free-to-access outdoor youth groups for biking, mountaineering, and open water swimming. We also offer a free of charge outdoor gear library.

What is the Kessock Ferry Swim?

  • 1200m swim across the iconic tidal Kessock narrows
  • Follow the old ferry route between South & North Kessock, with easy entry & exit from the old pier
  • An Invernessian tradition dating back to 1946
  • Non-competitive event supporting the local community in Merkinch & South Kessock

How would you like to enter?

Sponsored Swimmer Entry £30
Enter for £30 and commit to fundraising a minimum of £150. Funds go to support our community outdoor programmes throughout Inverness. We also pass on a £1,500 donation from sponsorship funds to our Community Partner - South Kessock Residents Association.

Standard Entry £70
Prefer not to fundraise? You can purchase a standard entry for £70.

What's Included in the Price?

We're aiming to give all swimmers a warm Inverness welcome and a top-quality swim experience, including:

  • Indoor changing with secure storage, just a short walk from the start / finish
  • New for 2024! SportIdent safety system, your choice between "timed" or "non-timed" waves
  • Comprehensive safety cover with a large fleet of RIBs and sea kayakers on the water
  • Professional event first aid cover, including a shuttle service should you need to retire halfway at North Kessock
  • A light meal from our favourite local catering firm Grazey Days

Who Can Take Part?

If you’re over 12 and confident you can safely complete the distance, then you can take part. Please bear in mind that it is a cold, exposed stretch of water which may be choppy on the day.
Aged 12 - 14? You must be accompanied by an adult swimmer throughout the swim. NB all swimmers under the age of 18 must wear a wetsuit in addition to the tow float which is mandatory for all swimmers.

The swim distance is approximately 1200m. This may vary on the day as precise tidal effect on a swimmer is inherently unpredictable. You should be confident that you can complete this distance in no more than 55 - 60 minutes. After that time the tide starts to run faster and all swimmers will have to be out of the water.
