For New Year 2023 the Cracker returns to the fascinating Low Park Wood, once home to the Sedgwick Gunpowder Works, where there is a variety of mixed woodland, subtle contour features and old industrial archaeological remains.

Entries

There is NO entry on the day at the event. However. entries will remain open on-line, so long as we have maps available, until just before the event. Enter before 29th December to avoid the late entry surcharge.

Travel Directions

The event is close to the roundabout where A590 meets A591. Leave the roundabout by the minor road signed Hincaster and Sedgwick. Take the first left, then carry on straight, alongside the river, until you reach the Low Park Wood car park. Please park as directed by marshalls.

Facilities

There will be portable toilets on the car park.

First Aid – a first aid kit will be available at download for people to self administer.

Courses

A choice of a more complex score (Fours, Fives & Sixes) for experienced orienteers and a classic score course for less experienced orienteers. The time limit will be 45 minutes, with penalties for late finishing. Both courses will have a mass start at 13.00. Please be ready to move to the start at 12.45.

Fours, Fives and Sixes. There are 3 groups of controls of differing value: the ones which numbers printed on the map start with a four (Fours - 40, 41, 42...) are valued at 4 points each, the ones starting with a five (Fives - 50, 51, 52...) - at 5 points each, and the ones starting with a six (Sixes - 60, 61, 62...) have a value of 6 points each. In addition, there are 3 switching controls (101, 102, 103) that are valued at zero points.

You may start with any of the three groups, visit one or more of the controls of the same group, then switch to any other group of controls, visit one or more, and finally switch to the last group of controls.

Once started on a chosen group of controls, visited controls of another group will not bring any points before a switching control is punched. E.g., a sequence of 41-42-43-61-62-63 will only fetch 12 points (4 points for each of 41, 42, and 43, zero points for the Sixes), while a sequence of 41-42-43-101-61-62 will bring 24 points (12 points for the Fours, zero points for the switching control, and 12 points for the Sixes).

The time limit is 45 minutes and there is a 1 point penalty for every 15 seconds (or part thereof) late.

Classic score. All controls are valued at 5 points each, regardless of their number on the map. The goal is to visit as many controls in 45 minutes as possible. There is a 1 point penalty for every 15 seconds (or part thereof) over the time limit.
