----------------------

Level D “sprint-style” orienteering event in Carlisle's Hadrian Wall park adjacent to the River Eden. Luguvalium was the Roman city name for Carlisle.

Travel & parking. If you would like to travel to Carlisle by public transport there are numerous trains and buses into the centre. Carlisle train station is 1.7km and the bus station 1.4km level walk to assembly/finish via Carlisle Castle.

If you travel by car please park in Castle Car Park – OS NY395562, nearest postcode CA3 8UR, what3words: songs.trio.spout. Pay & display charges apply here (cars are £1 for 1 hour, £2.20 for 2 hours, £2.60 for 3 hours or £3 for the day. You can pay with cash at the machines or mobile payment is possible using the MiPermit app).

If you arrive by bike please bring a lock. You will be able to leave your bike securely at assembly (download) where there will be someone on hand at all times.

Assembly/Start/Finish. These are all located close together. Assembly will be at the North end of the car park. The start and finish will be visible, both approx 50m distant.

If you have pre-entered you can go direct to the start.

Start times are 11:00 to 12:15. Courses close at 13:45; please finish by this time so we can collect controls in before dark.

Courses. All courses are “sprint-style” orienteering.

Green (technical) 5.1km, 30 controls (NB. This is straight line. Planners optimum estimate is about 6.7km, +30%)

Short green (technical) 2.9km, 24 controls (straight line but optimum is not as much extra as for Green)

Yellow (suitable for beginners) 2.1km, 17 controls.

Controls may be close together and courses will twist and turn within the park. Please read the map carefully to identify your correct next control and check control codes when you punch!

Terrain. Luguvalium Parcum (or Bitts Park) is a city park on the flood plain of the River Eden adjacent to Carlisle Castle. It is predominantly flat with some ornamental gardens, play areas and a large plain grass meadow.

The Yellow course stays entirely within the park and is car free. On the technical courses you may be tempted to run across a main road on part of the course – DO NOT. Cars will not be expecting pedestrians and is why all main roads are marked Out of Bounds in the usual way. Underpasses are marked and you must use these.

In December the grass areas may be wet and all paved areas can be slippery if wet. Please wear appropriate footwear. Shorts may be worn.

Map. Updated November 22, printed at 1:3000 on A4 waterproof paper. Control descriptions will be printed on the front of the map, pictorial for Green and Short Green, text for Yellow. We are hoping to provide loose descriptions at download; these will be inkjet printed so will need protection from moisture.

Please respect out of bounds and uncrossable features as marked on the map. Flower beds in particular are not so splendid at this time of year but are nevertheless still out of bounds.

EntriesPre-entry via SiEntries, Adults £5, Juniors £2. Entries close at midnight on 8th December. There will be limited entry on the day for the Yellow course. If you are new to orienteering and would prefer to go round as a group just enter one person and use the option to select any additional maps the groups would like at £1 each.

If you are planning to bring a large group and have not pre-entered please contact the organiser to ensure there may be sufficient maps.

Punching. SportIdent punching will be used for the event. Controls will be enabled for contactless punching for those with SIAC cards. The start and finish will need to be punched manually. If you don't have your own dibber these will be provided on the day.

Facilities. Public toilets are a short distance away in the park at Tribe Carlisle. These are in the competition area – a small map extract will be available showing the route to/from the toilets. After your run you are encouraged to visit the Hub centre in the middle of the map where there are various “containerised” outlets serving coffee, tea and light snacks.

Safety. A comprehensive risk assessment has been prepared for this event by the organiser. Participants take part at their own risk and are responsible for their own safety during the event.

General. Please be aware of and courteous to other users of the park, particularly young children who may be in or around the play areas. There may be dog walkers and cyclists in the park. Dogs welcome.

Acknowledgements. Border Liners would like to thank Carlisle City Council for permission to use the park.
