The Fellsman is a high level traverse covering more than 60 miles over very hard rugged moorland. The event climbs over 11,000 feet in its path from Ingleton to Threshfield in the Yorkshire Dales. Most of the route is over privately owned land, the use of which is secured by the organisers for the weekend only. This being the case, the route does not follow well defined footpaths, so the entrants’ navigational skills with a map and compass are tested as well as their physical fitness. Because of this, only fit and experienced walkers or runners should enter.
First run in 1962, and organised by Keighley Scout Service Network, this year is the 59th Fellsman. Starting at Ingleton Community Centre, entrants will navigate around the course via 25 hilltop and roadside checkpoints before finishing at Upper Wharfedale School at Threshfield near Grassington. The event runs from 08:30 on Saturday until approximately 13:00 on Sunday. A selection of hot and cold drinks and food are provided at each of the 8 roadside checkpoints where transport to the finish can be accessed if required. GPS tracking is in use on this event allowing your progress to be tracked by friends and family.
Further details of the location of checkpoints, the menu of food available on the event, and the full rules, including the mandatory kit to be carried can be found on the website. As there is limited parking at Ingleton, entrants may wish to park at the finish and travel to the start on the Saturday morning. Please note we cannot offer return transport to Ingleton after the event. For this purpose limited accommodation options are available at Threshfield on the Friday night, together with the option of an early kit check, Friday supper and Saturday breakfast. Please indicate if you require these meal options at time of booking.
Your £95 entry fee includes: hire of tracking equipment for the duration of the event; a pdf of the event handbook; your iconic Fellsman tally; a commemorative item of clothing/equipment; hot food and refreshments around the route; transport from checkpoints back to Threshfield in the event of retirement; accommodation facilities at Threshfield; car parking at Threshfield; a hot meal on your return to Threshfield; all P&P as required. It also includes a £1 donation to the Friends of the Three Peaks Campaign.
