Route description and Map: Please find the  map of the route here http://www.eskvalleyfellclub.org/race_routes/Lockton%20Limping.pdf

The starting point is an approx. 1100m walk, west, from the village hall so allow 15 minutes to get there, remembering to carry your required kit - it's too far to return back to your car!

  • There is a steep stony, slippery when wet , descent 200m after starting. Part way down at the metal field gate if you want to avoid the steep and slippy descent through the wood, then an alternative longer route through the grass field and gorse bushes will be marked with tape.
  • At CP1, before the farm, turn right over the footbridge.
  • The next 2km of woodland and pasture is straight forward, though muddy after rain. Ascending the clear-felled plantation of Keldgate Slack do not miss the right turn off the main track to reach the stile, contour path and CP2 higher up.
  • Descending from CP2 there is a right turn back up the hill, to  CP3, just after passing under the overhead electric wires - don't miss it!
  • Be aware that at CP3 you emerge onto a road directly below a blind corner so be alert for any traffic emerging and descending from the crest of the hill and also ascending the hill.
  • Run down the road ensuring that you reach the marshals at CP4 to use the public footpath and do not cut across the open moor before CP4.
  • After CP5b the fast descent down Dundale Griff is both rocky and crossed by many tree roots.
  • From CP6 to CP7 the path along Levisham Brow is undulating and muddy when wet, and is single track making it difficult to pass others.
  • CP7 marks an acute left turn down to Wedland Slack.
  • About 1000m after CP7 there is a wooden bridge to cross . In wet conditions this bridge and the wooden duck boards directly before it are VERY SLIPPERY and hazardous , so please slow down and  take care crossing them.
  • The final 400/500m from the bridge is undulating path which steepens sharply just before the last field , all of which turns muddy in wet weather. The finish is at the hand gate of the field next to the road.
  • When leaving the finish area be vigilant for traffic and other road users.
