What to expect
Spend an enjoyable day running on and off trails in the Lake District while learning about terrain, navigation and the kit needed to go on your own.
Would you like to learn more about mountain running but don’t know where to start? Have you entered a trail race and would like to know how to prepare?
Join us in the beautiful Lake District where we explore the surrounding fells while learning about movement and route choice on the terrain, navigation, kit and weather. You will have the chance to practice and learn together. This will be a small group so you will have plenty of opportunity to ask questions.
Who is it for?
The runs will be SLOW. We will be moving at a slow pace, with frequent stops so no one will get left behind. We will be out on our feet for quite a few hours on the day, but this will be a mixture of walking and running with frequent stops and snack breaks. If you are comfortable running slowly for an hour on the flat or walking in the hills for 5-6 hours you should be fine. The aim here is for everyone to learn and get the most out of the day and fitness shouldn’t be a barrier. If you have any concerns, please contact us.
Arrival Time: 9:30
9:30 - Meet your guide and fellow participants and talk about what you would like to get out of the day.
10am – 4pm - Head out onto the fells. Please bring lunch which we will be eating out on the hill. The format of the day will vary depending on location and conditions but will include
Practicing on different types of terrain both on and off path
Navigation, including reading a map, understanding contours, how to orientate a map and take a bearing, and terrain and route choices
Discussing kit options
Dealing with emergencies
Different types of races and how to address the challenges they present.
4pm – head down to the valley for a well-earned drink in the local pub and chat about what everyone has learnt.
What to bring
Ordnance Survey 1:25,000 OL4 Map
Warm running clothes. We will do some running but will also spend lots of time staying still while we practice navigation and have discussions. Extra layers are essential
Full waterproof cover (jacket and trousers)
Suitable footwear for wet ground, preferably off road/running shoes. Contact us if you have any concerns

About Peak Confidence
Peak Confidence is born out of a vision that the mountains needn’t solely be the playground of bearded men and grizzled mountain guides. Our aim is for people of all backgrounds and experience levels to be able to learn new skills and to enjoy the hills with newfound confidence in their abilities. We run courses in the beautiful Lake District with our supportive guides on hand to show you all the best hidden spots.
Some of our weekends are exclusively for women, others are mixed, and all are a comfortable environment to ask questions and learn from each other. There are a range of different events on offer, from navigation and walking, to rock climbing and beginners fell running.
About your instructor
Hi, I’m Rebecca. I have always enjoyed the outdoors. I spent most of my adult life based in London spending many a weekend travelling up to the national parks for climbing and running. Two years ago I started living in the Lake District so that I could spend more time doing what I love.
I have worked for many years with adults and young people who have mental health problems, and alcohol and substance use issues. I believe the best way to improve people’s lives is to empower them to take responsibility for their own recovery and I am passionate about supporting people through this and giving them the tools to do it successfully. I have put this into action through working and volunteering for organisations such as St Mungo’s, local church organisations and the NHS, and I am also an expedition leader for British Exploring Society expeditions.
I have completed several ultramarathons and enjoy fell running as a way to explore the hills. When the weather allows, I also enjoy climbing and I am particularly excited by big, mountaineering multi-pitch climbs which allow me to explore remoter parts of the mountains. I hold Summer Mountain Leader, Rock Climbing Instructor and Outdoor First Aid qualifications
My leadership style has been described as ‘calm, well informed, quietly clear and powerful while easy going’. My aim is the bring out the best in students and allowing them to work things out for themselves while also realising how much potential they have.
