Mountain/OMM Practical Navigation | Intermediate to Advanced | Follow up to Online MM Navigation

Full day Mountain/OMM Navigation Day | Based from Glenridding | Great as a course on its own, a refresher with old skills or a continuation to one of our uber popular online sessions.

Delivered by The Nav Guy - Sean Bolland - who hosts the Online Navigation Masterclasses

** To get the best from this course, it would be helpful if you understand the following in some respect:

  • Understand scales, features and have a good understanding of contours
  • Know how to set a bearing correctly and understand the principle of following it.
  • Understand about map orientation and why this is necessary for good navigation
  • Understand the terms; Hand-railing, collecting and catching features, aiming off and attack points [you just need the understanding, we will develop the skills on the course]

What to expect:

  • 5/6 hours of on the hill, practical navigation
  • Tips and tricks to keep you in contact with the map

  • Elite mountain runners delivering the course, who are extremely passionate and knowledgeable about their subject

Mountain Marathon and/or Orienteering Maps of the area you are training in

What will you learn?

  • How to use the techniques of; Hand-railing, collecting and catching features, aiming off and attack points
  • How to use and swap between coarse and fine navigation and why we use these techniques
  • A further understanding of contour interpretation and how to develop this knowledge.
  • Simple tricks and tips to keep you in contact with the map and your surroundings
  • Quick relocation skills
  • How to read the map whilst on the move using acute and periphery vision

Course Program

Course timings:

09:15 to 16:15 [allowing you to take a basic session first as a refresher]

  • Meet at the course location
  • Listen to a quick overview and recap on basic techniques

Head into the hills to learn and put in to practice; hand-railing, collecting and catching features, aiming off, using attack points and coarse/fine navigation, thumbing the map, running on the needle and much more
