Gold Award for the NNAS

What to expect

It is not required to have the NNAS Bronze or Silver Certificates before signing up for the Gold level, BUT we prefer it if you have the Silver level! iIf you feel that you really are up to Gold Level, then please call Nicola on 07976 949488 before signing up, so we can discuss your previous experience. 

If you demonstrate the correct understanding after 2 days intensive training and assessment, then you will walk away with an NNAS Gold Certificate and acheiving this Gold level will put you in a great position for entering higher level Mountain Marathons, or put it towards a Mountain Leader Training course, and will really help with the find navigation off trail on extreemly varied terrain.

You will be crossing open fell, for the most part of this course durations and this will not be on paths except to reach the open fell.  Having said this we will travel very slowly over this ground and ensure the safety of participants.  We will mostly only be walking over grassey tussocks, boggy area and occasional rocky sections which could be technical.

PLEASE BE AWARE THAT WE WILL BE FOLLOWING ALL RECOMMENDED GUIDELINES FROM THE GOVERNMENT AT THE TIME OF THE COURSE WITH REGARDS TO COVID-19, SOCIAL DISTANCING AND PPE IN CASE OF EMERGENCY, AND ALSO REGULATIONS SPECIFIED BY NNAS. If regulations change and we cannot deliver this course, there will be the option to swap to different course or ask for a full course refund.

What will you learn?

    • Utilise the skills and techniques of the Bronze and Silver Awards in the context of Gold National Navigation Award navigation strategies.
    • Utilise contours and fine detail as the prime method of navigation.
    • Accurately: Follow a route, judge distance, check progress against time, use relevant compass skills and maintain continuous map contact.
    • Use back bearings and transits to confirm the current position.
    • Use aspect of slope as an aid to relocation.
    • Select appropriate techniques within an overall navigation strategy.
    • Navigate in intricate terrain in reduced visibility i.e. mist or darkness.
    • Select an appropriate, safe route in relation to height gain and loss, dangerous terrain and other major hazards.
    • Assess the route ahead in the field in relation to prevailing conditions or changing circumstances (e.g. weather, time, daylight, ability/fitness) and re-plan the route appropriately if necessary.
    • Shorten a route, use an escape route and know emergency procedures.
    • Recognise the occurrence of a navigational error within a few minutes and apply appropriate relocation techniques.
    • Select appropriate clothing, equipment and first aid for walking in remote areas in all weather conditions.
    • Understand the physical demands created by hill and moorland terrain in all weather conditions.
    • Understand the effects of cold, heat, fatigue and discomfort on decision making and execution of a selected route.
    • Understand the implications of climate change on the outdoor environment and be knowledgeable in practical steps to mitigate its effect.
    • Understand the pros and cons of appropriate electronic navigation devices and describe/demonstrate their use in the context of Gold terrain.

  • Increase your route potential by being able to plan breath taking routes for friends/groups for more experienced walkersand those wanting to explore - whatever the terrain, or time of day.

Who is it for?

Fell Walkers & Trail Runner, especially those wishing to up into the mountains to their full potential and take themselves way off the beaten track for added interest and fun, in a safe manner, but also to be able to make the right choice when to get themselves off the fell by deviating the route at short notice and in bad weatehr and little visiability.  

This is an advanced-level course for navigation for personal development & will give you a NNAS (National Navigation Award Scheme) Gold Award, assuming you are able to demonstrate a good understanding and application of the skills being learnt on the course.

  • Notes on the course, as there is always a lot to absorb, which will be emailed to you each evening of the course for you to read over
  • A NNAS Gold Award certificate, assuming you demonstrate a good understanding of the 2 days of learning & application

Course Program

Meeting place: Dockray / Pooley Bridge - Ullswater, Lake District

Details:  

There will be course work pre arrival, which will be emailed to you 1 week prior to the course, this should take no longer than a couple of hours.  There will also be either homework on the Saturday night or post-course work (which ever you prefer), taking around 1 hour to complete.

Day 1:  10:45 - Meet and greet - for an 11am start.  Finish time approx 6pm. 

Day 2: 8:30 start - 15:30/16:00  finish

What to bring

  • Compass
  • MAP REQUIREMENTS - please let me know if you need me to buy you any of these from our local shop in the village, 'Catstycam', as it is good to support them :
  • Harvey/BMC 1:40'000 map of the Lake District
  • Harvey/BMC 1:25'000 map of the Lake District East (if you have historic Harvey maps you will find you will need Central and East maps from your mapshelf!)
  • Ordnance Survey 1:50'000 no 90
  • Ordnance Survey 1:25'000 OL5 
  • Please bring your own food, hill snacks, drink & hot drink and suitable mountain kit for yourself for a full day out in unpleasant considations, even if the weather is due to be good.  Please bring your own 1st aid kit and emergency blanket and small shelter if you have one, and of course your own head torch & spare or spare batteries. By Gold Level you should understand the required personal kit list, if you are unsure please get in touch.

 Meet your coach - Nicky Sproson

Nicola is the inspiration behind Walx Helvellyn Ullswater, as well as being a qualified Mountain Leader, Nic has navigated her way around on the Mountain Marathon scene in the Lakes and Scotland also.  As well as guiding her Nordic Walking group up and all over the Lakeland fells on a weekly basis, Nic take herself navigating in all conditions to keep navigation skills fresh and at her finger tips.
