On the edge of the Lake District, in the shadow of the Howgills, lies the valley of Lower Borrowdale. There has been the occasional race in this area over the years, the most recent being a leg or 2 of the FRA relays 2021 sneaking into the end of the range, but this race takes in the entire skyline of Lower Borrowdale.
20km, 1000m climbing - AM standard fell race, setting off at 12 - FRA English Championships
You start the race at Low Borrowdale farm in the middle of the valley and hit a good climb from the off to get you on to the ridge line. The race heads in a westerly direction towards the A6 before descending to Borrow Beck to cross the stepping stones - definitely better through the river! A steep climb up the south side of the valley gets you back onto the skyline and takes you through a totally different landscape of rocky outcrops and forest. You follow the small summits all the way to Whinfell trig point where the descent towards the M6. Cross the temporary stile and continue the steep descent. A sharp pull up Jeffreys mount gets you back on to the ridge where you follow the quad track back to the bridleway to descend to the finish.
There is also a 10km fell race, suitable for everyone, setting off at 12.30.
Parking is available for a community donation in Tebay (precise location on FB page) and you are then encouraged to lift share with a full vehicle up Lower Borrowdale Valley to the on site car parking - taking extreme care on the lane. Car parking on site is payable on the day, per car at £5 for 1 or 2 people in the car or £2 for 3 or more people in the car. There is limited space so please be considerate.
