NIMRA Championship – Medium distance race

Registration: 9.45 – 10.45 am forestry hut Kilbroney (face mask required)

Route Description
Start GR 185176 Kilbroney Forest Park – small car park beside forestry office.
Climb steadily on good forest path towards Fiddlers Green. At approx. 450 meters take right hand fork and follow undulating track for approx. 750m , turn sharp left on steep single track forest path and follow well marked track through forest. Follow track crossing middle forest path and continue on well-marked steep route until reaching open mountain GR 196167.
On emerging to open mountain follow fence/wall over Slievemeen to checkpoint at top of Slieve Martin GR 201176. Return to fence line ( DO NOT cross fence) and follow fence line in N direction descending to fence corner at GR 203181.
Follow well marked route over rough ground around Crenville arriving at forest path GR 204189.
For next 5km you are on fast forest paths .
Take right (uphill) on reaching path (from Crenville) and follow path as it curves through the forest turning left at path junction at GR 211199. Continue on path until junction at GR 197194 veer left and continue uphill. Upon reaching a bridge start a steep climb GR 197177 on the “zig zag” path through the forest.
Leave the forest GR 202174 and follow the fence , climbing Slievemeen and on past Ballynagelty. Descend very steeply to enter the forest at GR 191170. Continue descent past Fiddlers Green to finish back at the forestry office GR 185176.

Equipment
All runners must carry;
a) Whistle
b) Compass
c) Map of the entire course (Mournes Outdoor Pursuits Map)
d) Emergency rations equivalent to one mars bar (minimum)
e) Waterproof garments affording complete body protection
f) Hat and gloves

Please bring the listed kit with you; runners will be advised of any adjustments to the kit list at registration. Runners will have their kit checked prior to the start.

Marshals
This race will use a combination of checkpoint dibbers and marshals.

Retirements
All retiring runners should report to the nearest marshal’s post (if possible), return by the safest, direct route and must report to the race organisers at the finish.

Please Note:

This race will be run under Athletics NI rules. All Participants will abide by the Athletics NI Back to Road Running Guidance (17th May) and in particular the section that says:

  • Participants must refrain from handshakes, hugs and high fives. Cover their coughs and sneezes. No spitting.
  • Try not touch any surfaces at the event.
  • All participants should leave as soon as they finish.
  • While running participants should always maintain a safe distance from others and should allow a safe distance while overtaking.

Participants must also wear a face covering for Registration which must be carried throughout the race. Buffs are acceptable.
