40km with 2800m ascent | Saturday 4th June 2022 | Based in Central Lake District

“The Scafell Sky Race is the most technical race I've ever done ... even tougher than Tromso! Emelie Forsberg would love it!" Lucy Bartholomew, 2017.

40km of mountain terrain and 2800m ascent: Scafell Sky Race is played out on technical, single-track trails from start to finish. It’s a Lake District journey that will test the speed and endurance of experienced and aspiring mountain runners.

Scafell Sky Race was the UK National Team qualifying race for the Skyrunning World Championships 2018, based in Scotland at the Skyline Scotland events.

“No other race has ever made me whoop and grin so much ... beautifully technical and full of great little route-choice surprises” Lianna B, 2017

40km of technical single-track and scree make this a classic skyrunning route to be reckoned with. The circular 'newly designed' route allows you to run from the iconic National Trust's Stickle Barn over Lakeland Fells and through Lakeland Valleys, whilst you summit England’s highest mountain on route and traverse some of the most challenging trails in the central Lake District.

Entry requirements

You must be at least 19 years old on race day to enter Scafell Sky Race.

Entries are not vetted: however, Scafell Sky Race is much more than your average trail run, this is a fully fledged Mountain Race and we expect you to come fully prepared. You will be tackling 40km of steep and technical terrain, and you will need to be a skilled and confident mountain runner to make the course cut-offs and complete the route. We will ask you to detail your relevant running/racing experience at the point of entry, and this may include:

  • Longer, technical trail races such as Keswick Mountain Festival 25 or 50km;
  • Other vetted or unvetted skyraces, e.g. Ring of Steall Sky Race, Mourne Skyline, V3K etc;
  • ‘Long’ category fell or hill races;
  • Skyrunning skills training courses with Mountain Run or elsewhere.

By entering the race, you are attesting your competence to complete the course. Any competitor found to have deliberately misled the Race Director with regard to their mountain running experience or ability will be expelled from the race and all future associated races.

Scafell Sky Race has been part of the Skyrunning UK series since 2017.
