This 24 mile high level circumnavigation of Thirlmere Reservoir features about 6500ft of ascent and we're sure it will soon become another classic event.

From the start in Grasmere you'll soon be clambering over the rocky outcrop that makes up the iconic summit of Helm Crag. Continuing across the undulating ridgeline that incorporates Gibson Knott and Calf Crag you'll then make an ascent to Greenup Edge. From there the route features an energy sapping traverse across the boggy moorland to summit Ullscarf and High Tove.

The course quickly descends to pick up the beautiful shoreline trail and loops around the far edge of Thirlmere via the dam. The long, steep ascent up Sticks Pass follows with the summits of Raise and Lower Man waiting before onwards to the high point of the event (and the 3rd highest summit in England), Helvellyn.

From here the route skirts both Nethermost Pike and Dollywaggon Pike on a brilliant high level mountain trail before descending to loop round Grisedale Tarn and back to Grasmere via the scenic Little Tongue.

With 6500ft of vertical elevation squeezed into it’s 24 miles this is not for the faint hearted. But if you undetake the challenge you'll be rewarded with ascents of some of the finest fells in the Lakes, incredible views, proper mountain trails, flowing footpaths, lots of bogs… and a bloody good meal afterwards!

Included in race entry fee is a comprehensive route description, timing, fully stocked check point with a wide variety of provisions, a hot meal at the end & a bespoke medal for all finishers.

Start time is 8.30am for all walkers & runners start at 9.30am, cut off is 6.30pm so there is 10 hours to complete the route, which should be plenty... even factoring in those climbs!

Please note, we enforce a mandatory kit list that can change dependant on weather forecast but you should be prepared to carry:

  • full body waterproof cover
  • minimum 500ml of water
  • portable cup for drinks
  • survival blanket & whistle
  • map & compass (and know how to use them) as this a self-navigated route.
  • Charged mobile phone

Camping will be available at Grasmere Sports Field on Saturday for £7.50 per night in tent or £20 in campervan or caravan.

This route has been knocking about as a list of grid references for years, but we've made a few tweaks to make it mass participant friendly and brought it to you in this format.
