It is a pleasure to announce that Lakeland Group will be hosting the brand-new Spring in Lakeland 50 as an Anytime Challenge for 2021.  (Please note that this event is totally separate from the 24 mile Spring in Lakeland event (also organised by Lakeland LDWA) which is being held on 10 April 2022.  You can find that event to enter also here on SiEntries by scrolling to 10 April 2022 in events listings.)

The event will be based in the village of Staveley, between Kendal & Windermere, and explores the beautiful and little walked South East corner of the Lake District. The format will be three loops from Staveley, so you will have options of between 16 and 50 miles depending on how you combine these loops (see below):

LOOP 1 (18 miles) follows the Dales Way to the outskirts of Windermere to join the tourists on an ascent of Orrest Head. A steady climb to near 1500 feet up the Gardale Pass reveals the Far Eastern Fells in all their glory and leads to the lovely quiet valley of Kentmere and back to Staveley.

LOOP 2 (16 miles) climbs Potter Fell for views as far as the 40 miles to Blackpool Tower on a clear day and into the even lovelier and quieter Longsleddale valley.

LOOP 3 (16 miles) goes South to Kendal via the impressive limestone escarpment of Scout Scar, with an easy return for tired legs along the River Kent.

If you undertake all three loops within a 24 hour timescale you will achieve a 50 mile qualifier for the 2022 Trans Pennine LDWA 100 Mile event - by 11 April 2022 please.  Beyond that you can choose to walk any of the following options (pick and mix):

Just Loop 1 - 18 Miles

Just Loop 2 = 16 Miles

Just Loop 3 = 16 Miles

Loop 2 with Loop 3 = 32 Miles

Loop 1 with Loop 2  = 34 Miles

Loop 1 with Loop 3 = 34 Miles

ALL THREE = 50 Miles.

Start location is Staveley outside the Village Hall Grid Reference: SD 470984.  There is street parking in the village but please respect access to businesses and homes. Start time is flexible, and you can participate any date of your choosing between 29 March 2021 and 11 April 2022 - note extended date for completion.  Please walk within the current legal COVID restrictions.  The event will be entirely unsupported, so there are no refreshments provided and no marshals on the route. Each loop returns to Staveley so you can store spare supplies in your car, and Staveley does offer various cafes and take away facilities which we hope you will all support.

Runners are very welcome to take part, but it is not a race - just a fun day out. The route of 50 miles must be completed within 24 hours to qualify for the 100.

When you enter the event, we email you right away with links to the route descriptions (PDF or word documents) for the three loops and the corresponding GPX files.
