Loch Ness Challenge powered by SSE Renewables

A new 3 day festival of running and cycling based around iconic Loch Ness on the new LochNess360ﹾ trail developed by linking the Great Glen Way on the north side of Loch Ness with the South Loch Ness Trail, completed in 2018, on the south side.

Approximately 90% of the trail is off road on a mixture of built trail, rough tracks and forest paths. Fantastic varied scenery, particularly on the South Loch Ness trail with superb views down on to Loch Ness.

The event offers participants the choice of:

  • Running Three Marathons over three days around the whole of Loch Ness starting and finishing in the village of Dores with overnight stops after each marathon, in Drumnadrochit and Fort Augustus
  • Running only one or two of the marathons – you decide!
  • The LochNess360 Ultra Marathon – running the full 129km of the LochNess360ﹾ around the loch, start and finishing in Dores.
  • The Bike Challenge – cycling the full 129km.

The total ascent around the LochNess360ﹾ is over 3000m. Even the ‘easiest’ marathon has over 700 metres of ascent – to complete any of these events requires a high level of fitness

Marathon 2 - 21st May 2022

Starting at Lewiston on the edge of Drumnadrochit, Marathon2 will head steeply uphill on to the Great Glen Way for almost 200 metres before the trail levels off. From here, stying up high above Loch Ness, it is an undulating run to Invermoriston on good quality trail with fantastic views down over the loch. On reaching Invermoriston having descended sharply from a high point of 320m, the route them climbs steelpy again for alomst another 300m. From here, it then continues to Fort Augustus where after a circuit alongside River Oich, the marathon finishes at Morag's Lodge in Fort Augustus.

The second marathon is tough, very tough - the total ascent is approximately 1250m, the route undulations will sap the strength form your legs and the major ascents at Drumnadrochit and Invermoriston will make or break you!
