The Kong Mountain Marathon is a new annual event and is designed to test both orienteering and fell running skills in extreme wild country terrain in Scotland over the weekend of the 5/6th June 2021. Each team of two navigates their way over the Scottish hills aiming to find a series of checkpoints as quickly as they can. Each team has to be self-sufficient and carry all their gear including equipment and food for an overnight camp. None of the courses or the overnight remote campsite location are disclosed until the team actually starts on Day 1. The competition has a range of courses to suit different levels of fitness and navigational expertise. After your weekend adventure you will be able to share you experiences with fellow competitors at a hearty meal and prize giving.

Since the 1990’s there has always been a two day Mountain Marathon in Scotland and many people will have fond memories of the LAMM and the Highlander which are sadly no longer being organised. We are two families – the Wainwrights and the Van Vroenhovens – who have organised Kong Mini-Mountain Marathons for the last 5 years. We are looking forward to the additional challenge of organising a weekend event and having a reason to explore pastures new in Scotland. We are a Community Interest Company and organise these events as a hobby so that any proceeds from the event can support local charities and rural businesses as well as enabling people of a range of ages and abilities to enjoy challenging events in wild and beautiful places.

We are very excited to have been given the opportunity by the landowners to organise the first Kong Mountain Marathon on the Isle of Arran. Beaches, palm trees, the Gulf Stream and mountains – what more could you want for a perfect weekend? There may be some midges, bogs, crags and enormous tussocks to add extra fun.

Arran can be easily and cheaply accessed by regular ferries from Ardrossan. There are linking trains from Glasgow Central Station to Ardrossan and the event centre is in the building of the Arran Sports Association at Ormidale Park within walking distance of the ferry in Brodick.

We strongly recommend making your way to the island on the Friday as ferries can sometimes be cancelled at short notice due to the weather. We are hoping most people will leave their cars on the mainland and will board the ferry as foot passenger as parking at the event centre is very limited. There is a good sized public car park at the harbour in Ardrossan.

Registration will be open on Friday evening and for a short time on Saturday morning. You can camp on the sports field next to registration and leave your tent there for the weekend with any equipment you are not taking on the race. Local beer, food and the Kong mobile shop will be available at the event centre on Friday evening and Saturday morning (NB options to order food will be added to SiEntries nearer the time).

After the race on Sunday a hearty meal is included in the entry cost for all competitors; there will also be a prize giving.
