LochNess360° Challenge
A new 3 day festival of running and cycling based around iconic Loch Ness on the new LochNess360ﹾ trail developed by linking the Great Glen Way on the north side of Loch Ness with the South Loch Ness Trail, completed in 2018, on the south side.
Approximately 90% of the trail is off road on a mixture of built trail, rough tracks and forest paths. Fantastic varied scenery, particularly on the South Loch Ness trail with superb views down on to Loch Ness.
The event offers participants the choice of:
- Running Three Marathons over three days around the whole of Loch Ness starting and finishing in the village of Dores with overnight stops after each marathon, in Drumnadrochit and Fort Augustus
- Running only one or two of the marathons – you decide!
- The LochNess360 Ultra Marathon – running the full 129km of the LochNess360ﹾ around the loch, start and finishing in Dores.
- The Bike Challenge – cycling the full 129km.
The total ascent around the LochNess360ﹾ is over 3000m. Even the ‘easiest’ marathon has over 700 metres of ascent – to complete any of these events requires a high level of fitness
Marathon 3 - 30th May 2021
The marathon starts on the South Loch Ness Trail where it crosses the Glendoe Hydro works road, high above Fort Augustus The initial 5km while rising approximately 250m is on wide, high quality trail. This is a particularly beautiful section to enjoy and savour and if your feet hurt you can always stop and bathe them in the cool waters of Loch Tarff! From the high point at Suidhe, the route then descends slowly to the village of Foyers. From Foyers the route then climbs for a short distance before descending to Inverfarigaig but this is only a brief respite. From Inverfarigaig there is a steady 7km climb up to the Fair Haired Lads Pass. This is the last climb! From here it’s all downhill (well, nearly!) to the finish at Dores.
Although another tough marathon route with approximately 1000m of ascent, it is, in our opinion, the most scenic of the three, with ever changing landscapes and fantastic views down the length of Loch Ness at Dores.
Start: Glendoe works road crossing - 9am
First cut off: Bus stop at Whitebridge – 11:30am (2.5hrs)
Second cut off: Fair Haired Lads Pass - 2:30pm (5.5hrs)
Finish: Dores - 5pm latest
Distance: 26.2 miles (42km) / 1,000 metres
