Sunset Ultra Marathons and Marathon

The Norfolk Coast Path runs for 83 miles from Hunstanton to Hopton-on-Sea, travelling through the Norfolk Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB).   Following the success of our winter Sunrise Ultramarathons along this course, we have decided to put on the summer equivalent and the Sunset Ultras were born!

Unlike their winter cousins which run during the hours of darkness, all Sunset events start during daylight hours, allowing you to enjoy the beautiful Norfolk coastline in all its glory.  As the sun rises in the east, you will be set off from the start in Great Yarmouth.  How far can you get before the sun sets in the west at 21:39, some 17 hours and 8 minutes later? For the speedier runners amongst you, can you reach the finish 83 miles away on the beach at Snettisham?

Support is provided along the route but is kept to a minimum, to minimise the environmental impact of the race and to add to the running adventure.  Please note that for this reason, runners own crew are banned from the course between the hours of 22:00 and 07:00.  Also, note that Pacers are not allowed.

A full indoor checkpoint is provided at roughly halfway, in Cley-next-the-sea.  Here you will have access to a drop bag and also be provided with warm food and drink. A further six additional mobile checkpoints will also be provided along the route but these will be limited to cold water and snacks, so pack accordingly.

For those that don’t fancy the full Sunset experience, we offer the Half Sunset. This starts from the “halfway” checkpoint at Cley-next-the-sea at 14:30 and follows the same route to the finish on Snettisham Beach, some 38 miles away.

Finally, we are pleased to include the Sunset Marathon. Starting at 16:30 on the beach at Wells-next-the-sea, you run westwards, joining the Norfolk Coast Path at Holkham Gap and onto the finish at Snettisham Beach.  You have 4 hours and 49 minutes to beat the sunset, can you make it?  Don't worry if not, as you have until midnight to reach the finish line.

Entry requirements

All events will be run under race permit 3487, granted by the TRA, following UKA rules for competition. As per UKA rules for races of these distances, you must be a minimum of 20 years old on the date of the event.

Full Sunset entrants must have previously completed a trail marathon

Time limits and cut-offs

For the Sunset you have until sunrise on the Sunday (04:34) to complete the course. There is an enforced cut off at the major checkpoint at Cley (45 miles) of 17:00 Saturday.

For the Half Sunset you have 9.5 hours to complete the 38 mile journey to Snettisham, with the finish line closing at midnight on Sunday. There are no cut-offs along the route.

For the Sunset Marathon you have 7.5 hours to complete the 26.5 miles, with the finish line also closing at midnight on Sunday. There are no cut-offs along the route.
