The race route and description of the event.

The race route is entirely on private land, there will be no traffic at all on the farm road and no members of the public have access to the land other than the main farm area and Parlour.

The children’s race route follows some of the field boundaries down the hill and meanders back towards the main farm building, for the 4-8-year-old children they must be accompanied by a parent or carer at all times on the race route. It is approx. 1.6k long. There will be several marshals along the entire route which will also be very clearly marked.

Children aged 9-12 will follow the same course but 2 loops and can do so un accompanied, they will be in clear view of at least 2 race marshals at all times.

13-15 year olds will follow the main 5 k course., 16+ will follow the main 5k course with the adults who have chosen to do the 5k, the 10k is for participants aged 18+ and the course is 2 loops of the 5k route.

The course heads down the farm lane before turning onto one of the meadows, heading through a gap in the wall the route climbs on the edge of some woodland before crossing another couple of fields then turning into the woods, a little more technical underfoot the course hugs the perimeter of the farm land then descends steeply before a small stream crossing and climbing the hill on the opposite bank. As you reach the top of the hill you come to a clearing where some trees have been felled before another more gentle climb on an out and back section, you will be almost back to the farm now and your return will be on some farm tracks on field perimeters. Your race medal and award-winning Ice Cream awaits you!

A little bit of information from our hosts at Wheelbirks Farm.

Dairy farming was first introduced to Wheelbirks in 1925, when Colin Richardson recognised a market for locally produced, top quality milk. The Wheelbirks herd of pedigree Jerseys are the oldest established and the only pedigree herd in Northumberland.

‚ÄčThe dairy farming methods have been passed down through the generations and present owners, brothers Tom and Hugh Richardson, still maintain the same high standards of the family line.

We are very proud of the welfare standards we uphold at Wheelbirks.

In the UK there is a scheme called the Red Tractor Scheme which assures the consumer that the produce they are eating has originated from a farm with high standards of animal welfare and cleanliness, among many other things. We are members of this scheme. Regular inspections of the farm premises, animals and businesses are carried out to ensure quality and animal welfare.

Our cows are very friendly and can often seen popping their heads out of the shed 'window' to say hello to customers!

Wheelbirks Ice Cream range is made using only the rich and creamy milk from Jersey cows giving the ice cream its smooth and distinctive taste.

The whole ice cream making process is carried out on site at Wheelbirks Farm – so you can be confident that whatever’s in the tub will be top quality, homemade Northumberland fare.

We love nothing more than making exciting flavours and in past have made intriguing flavours such as coffee and croissant, passion fruit cheese cake and even garlic and balsamic vinegar.
