Event Administrator - Dave Prince

After 37 years, 2020 sees two major changes to our Full and Half Yomp routes.

  • Our premier event, the Full Yomp becomes a 38k runners-only fell race, Category B Long-Medium.
  • The Half Yomp has had two kilometres added, becoming a 20k route. This route is open to both runners and walkers.

Our 10k (Short) Yomp remains unchanged!

  • The 38k Yomp Fell Race is for runners only. Abiding strictly to FRA rules, participants must be fully equipped and capable of navigating the fells in any weather.  There will be no flags!  The route and check points remain the same as previous years.  All entrants should aim to complete the circuit in under 6 hours.  The minimum age is 18 and full FRA rules apply.  Includes 3,900 ft of ascent. Registration is between 10 am and 11 am, with a mass start at 11 am.
  • The 20k Yomp takes a slightly different route to previous years with the new circuit eliminating a horribly boggy section and adds an extra peak – High Pike. The minimum age is 11, anyone under the age of 16 must be accompanied.   Includes 2,200 ft of ascent.  Registration is between 8.30 am and 9.45 am, with a mass start at 10 am.
  • The 10k Yomp route remains the same as previous years with the route covering the same ground as the final section of the two main courses. This is a great route for all, including children of 5 and over walking with their parents or teachers.  Includes 550 ft of ascent.  Registration is between 11 am and 12 noon, following by a classic coach ride up to the start point at Tailbridge Hill.  Timed starts no later than 1 pm.

The 38k Yomp Fell Race and the 20k Yomp both start and finish at Kirkby Stephen Grammar School.  The routes head south out of the town and past Wharton Hall.  The courses then split:
The 38k course continues southwards, over Wild Boar Fell and on to Swarth Fell, turning east down to Aisgill Moor.  It then climbs via Hell Gill onto Mallerstang Edge, passes over High Seat and High Pike before dropping down to the Swaledale road at Tailbridge.  The final stage ascends to the Nine Standards, then back down to Kirkby Stephen.
The 20k Yomp climbs to the top of High Pike before re-joining the 38k Yomp Fell Race route.
Following registration at Kirkby Stephen Grammar School, the 10k Yomp starts at Tailbridge.  Transport to the start is provided courtesy of Cumbria Classic Coaches.

Landowners have given permission for the Yomp routes to cross their land on the day of the event only.  This restricted permission in no way constitutes agreement to any right of way.

There are prizes for the 38k Yomp Fell Race winners and individual and team trophies.  All finishers, regardless of course, receive a certificate and medal.

Full registration details are provided upon booking.
