This course consists of a 3 hour sessions to master the Nordic techniques.... Basic, Hills & Speed and also cover moving swiftly over rougher ground, typical to the Lake District.

Each hour, as we progress through the fundamentals of the Nordic Walking techniques - a short teaching session will be followed by a short walk to practice your new skills as they progress.

1st Part: Gaining forward propulsion from the poles by engaging the correct upper body muscles, understanding correct gait and co-ordination.

2nd Part: Mastering handgrip and use of the pole straps in order to develop technique by adapting the body position and pole angles for walking up and down hills.

3rd Part: Understanding the extension of the arm swing from the shoulder in order to push your body forward to the next level for the speed technique, understanding the hand roll of the poles whilst releasing the fingers and re-gaining control upon forward swing of the poles, we will explore what happens to the stride length and speed whilst learning this.  We will also try to increase the cardio vascular and aerobic fitness by demonstrating the Running With Pokes and Skipping with Poles!

Leki Nordic Walking Poles are provided for the duration of the course, with the opportunity to buy from Nic or by mail-order thereafter.

Whilst learning to Nordic Walk you will also understand the posture benefits of these techniques, and how to burn 40% more calories than normal walking, and use 90% of our muscles, whilst reducing the pressure off the lower limb joints by up to 40% too, which can be magic medicine for those suffering with knee and hip problems whilst fell walking.

All you need is suitable outdoor clothing and a warm layer and comfortable Trainers with a good trail grip (or walking boots if you do not have any trainers suitable for the fells)  and waterproofs in case of the changeable Lake District weather, a hat and gloves too! There will be lots of stopping and starting whilst we learn each technique and in wintertime you may feel the cold so dress up with warm layers which you can remove. Bring a water bottle and snack in a small rucksack which you can use for your extra clothing also.

This course is run by Nicola Sproson
In and around the Lake District fells Nic’s Nordic Walks are organised by Nicola Sproson, to give folk the opportunity to join a ‘gym without walls’, to exercise in the outdoors with spectacular views and to fulfil exercise aims using Nordic Walking poles. This is just such a great way to be outdoors & get fit, come rain or shine, with a low impact activity and using 90% of the bodies muscles.

Please note this course is NOT about the walk, but about everyone mastering the techniques well to make sure you are a proficient Nordic Walker by the end of the course.
