The High Peak Marathon is an overnight challenge race for fell runners/walkers held annually since 1972. It is organised by past and present members of the University of Sheffield’s Mountaineering and Outdoor Activity Clubs. The route is based on the ‘Derwent Watershed’ in the Dark Peak, the famous long distance walk first established by Eustace Thomas of the Manchester Rucksack Club in 1918. The High Peak Marathon is highly regarded by fell runners and walkers as a very special event. It attracts entrants from across the UK including many famous names in the sport. We accept entries for 50 teams of 4 and receive far more entries than can be accommodated. Entries are vetted for evidence of previous experience and navigation skills.
The HPM can test a competitor's fitness, endurance and navigational skills to their limit. The route is at least 40 miles long and for much of it the terrain is pathless peat bog. The dark, lack of sleep and winter weather add to the challenge. All entrants should therefore be certain that they have the fitness and navigation skills and experience required to make a safe passage.
Teams start at one minute intervals from 11pm on the Friday evening, with an earlier 10pm start available for 'walking teams'. Tea and sandwiches are available at Edale before the start. Various food stuffs, hot drinks and water will be available en-route at Cutthroat Bridge and Snake Summit. A hot meal will be provided at the finish.
