Build your confidence and skill in the mountains with our Basic Navigation Day for Trail & Ultra Runners. 

This one day course will give you the basic skills to build on to start to unlock the matrix of the mountains and deliver you freedom to choose your own path. 

What to expect? 

A professionally designed and delivered course for trail and ultra runners, by trail and ultra runners. Expect detailed course information, delivered in-doors where its warm, then heading out in to the lower fells of the Ullswater Valley to put it all into action, growing you skills and confidence with each footstep.

  • How to read a map, understand contours & features
  • How to use a compass in conjunction with your map
  • How to orientate your map
  • How to set a bearing
  • How to plan a route
  • Some safe navigational techniques
  • Identify hazards
  • Confidence in your own ability

What's included? 

  • A map of the local area we are to use
  • Warm indoor location to learn in
  • 2+ hours theory in-doors
  • 4 hours practical navigation in the lowland fells of the Ullswater Valley
  • Tea, coffee and cake
  • Notes for you to take away, as there is always a lot to absorb.
  • Compass should you need one, but we encourage you to buy you own, as you will need one after the course.

Course Program

Date: Friday 2nd November 2018

Time: 09:00

Meeting place: Mountain Run HQ; Ullswater Visitor Centre, Glenridding, CA11 0PD

Details:

  • 09:00 - Meet and greet with Tea, Coffee and Cake
  • 09:15 - Around 2.5 hours theory in the Mountain Run HQ
  • 11:45 - Break for Lunch
  • 12:15 - 3 hour plus practical navigation session navigating to orienteering control kites
  • 16:00 - Course closes (be prepared to overrun slightly)

The course is based around the fells of the Patterdale Valley, this could be either side. Conditions dependant.

What to bring

  • CompassHarvey/BMC 1:40'000 map of the Lake District/Ordnance Survey 1:25'000 OL5
  • Full waterproof cover (Jacket and Pants), these must be taped seems, please call to discuss if your not sure.
  • Clothing suitable for the countryside & time of year - We will not be moving quickly, so please account for that in your clothing selection.
  • 1 spare warm top, not cotton please. Wool or synthetic will be fine
  • Suitable footwear for wet ground, preferably off road walking/running shoes suitable for trail running or nordic walking.
  • Hat & Gloves
  • Lunch, day-food & water.
