INVOC welcomes you to an evening event at Culloden Woods which encompasses the final event of the 2018 INVOC School league. We offer you a range of courses to suit all ages and abilities, including beginners.

Terrain or Planner’s Comments: A mainly coniferous forest but with some varied terrain. There is a very good path network throughout the forest but in particular in the area close to the start where the easier courses are concentrated making it a good venue for schools, families and beginners. Being on a hillside there is some ascent on all courses with this normally being in the early stages of the course.

The main Inverness-Perth railway runs through the wood. There is one bridge over it and several tunnels under it. The railway is STRICTLY OUT OF BOUNDS and can only be crossed by the bridge or tunnels. Some of the tunnels may be wet but this should cause no difficulty. The wood is popular with dog walkers, joggers and other members of the public. Please be careful to avoid collisions!

Map:  Pre-marked and printed on waterproof paper, scale 1:10,000 (White 1: 7,500) with 5m contour intervals.

Directions:  From the A96, turn southeast onto Barn Church Road at the Culloden roundabout (sign posted Balloch/Culloden/Smithton) and continue until the traffic lights at the junction with Tower Road. Turn right onto Tower Road. After 350m turn right onto Murray Road and Smithton Church (parking) is on your left.

Parking:  Parking will be at Smithton Church car park.  Grid Ref NH716455. If this becomes full you will be directed to park on Murray Terrace or Murray Road.  This is a residential area so please be very careful not to block any driveways/access etc. if on-street parking is necessary. Please do not arrive before 3:30pm to allow local school traffic to clear, thank you

Toilets: There will be a portaloo on the way to the start (near the Forestry Commission car park).

Registration/start location: Registration (dibber and map collection) and First Aid tent will be located near the Start, approx. 500m from Smithton Church car park. The route will be signed and taped.  Please note that the route crosses Tower Road which will be patrolled by a marshal. Please take care when crossing with your group and ensure children are supervised.

Ensure pupils take jackets/extra fleeces to the registration area as they may have to wait around for other team members to return from their courses. Once at the start you can set up a base for your group (for jackets, water bottles, etc). You should return to the parking as a group once all your pupils have completed their courses

Start: Punching start using Sport ident. Start times will not be pre-allocated, turn up when you are ready and the start official will let you start when there is space on your course. There may be short delays at popular times.

Start time: For schools will be between 3.40pm and 4.45pm, so all school groups should have completed their courses by 5:45pm at the latest. Starts will remain open for non-school competitors until 6:15pm.

Finish: South East of the forestry car park. Route to download will be signed and taped to avoid the car park.  All runners MUST return to download

Course Length Climb
White 1.5km 45m
Yellow 2.4km 50m
Orange 2.5km 65m
Light Green 3.9km 100m
Green 5.2km 120m

Course lengths and climbs are provisional

Registration for schools opens 3:30pm, non-school competitors:  4:30-6:15pm

Courses close: Courses close promptly 7.15pm.

Entries:  Schools must pre-enter on or before Wednesday 9th May

SAFETY: All participants must report to the Finish/Download tent, even if they have not finished their course. Otherwise you may trigger a search party. It is recommended that all children carry a whistle. Six short blasts indicate a competitor in trouble, anyone hearing this signal is asked to offer assistance. Stout footwear is advised eg fell shoes/trainers with good grips. In case of bad weather please dress appropriately.  Competitors may be advised to wear a waterproof jacket

Medical Conditions: You have the option of completing a medical form at registration. It could be lifesaving if the organisers are aware of any existing medical conditions in the event of an incident. You can leave it in a sealed envelope that will only be opened if required and destroyed after the event.
