INVOC welcomes you to an evening event at Ord Hill which encompasses the second schools league event for 2018. We offer you a pleasant day orienteering near Inverness with a range of courses to suit all ages and abilities including beginners.

Terrain: Ord Hill overlooks the Moray Firth just across the Kessock Bridge from Inverness. It has beautiful, open mixed forest with a fine network of paths and tracks around the tumbled remains of an Iron Age Fort.

Map: Pre-marked and printed on waterproof paper, scale 1:10,000 with 5m contour interval

Directions: There are 2 entries points for Ord Hill so please note carefully which one you should use.

Cars and small mini-buses - From Inverness – just north of the Kessock bridge take the L slip road signposted N.Kessock/Drumsmittal. At the roundabout take the 3rd (Drumsmittal/Kilmuir) exit and pass under the A9. Take the next L signed Drumsmittal/Kilmuir and follow that road until you come to a converted schoolhouse “Lewis Recordings”. Take R turn here signed Kilmuir and follow this road round a sharp L bend.  50m after the bend on the right hand side is the entrance to the car park via a forest track.

Travelling southbound on the A9 take the exit signposted for Kilmuir and Drumsmittal just before the Kessock bridge and follow the directions as above.

Coaches and large mini-buses - Schools arriving by coach must park in the Highland council car park just off the A9 southbound and walk up to the starts from there.

Parking: Arriving by car/minibus: Schools arriving by car/minibus will be parked in the Forestry Commission car park (directions above). Grid Reference NH654488. Respect local residents – there is a house at the end of the forest track - please do not block access.

Arriving by coach: Schools arriving by coach must park in the Highland council car park just off the A9 southbound and walk up to the starts from there.

Toilets: There are limited toilet facilities. A portaloo will be available at the higher car park. The public toilets in the lower car park are closed and not available..

Registration (Start & Finish) location: Registration (dibber and map collection) and First Aid tents are located at the Start, approx. 150m from the upper car park and 1.1km from the lower car park. The route will be on a path and taped – please follow the red and white tape and orienteering signs.

The start is approx. 600m from registration.

Ensure pupils take jackets/extra fleeces to the registration area as they may have to wait around for other team members to return from their courses. Once at the start you can set up a base for your group (for jackets, water bottles, etc). You should return to the parking as a group once all your pupils have completed their courses

Start: punching Sport ident,

It is recommended that all children carry a whistle. Six short blasts indicate a competitor in trouble, anyone hearing this signal is asked to offer assistance. Stout footwear is advised eg fell shoes/trainers with good grips. In case of bad weather please dress appropriately.  Competitors may be advised to wear a waterproof jacket

It could be lifesaving if the organisers are aware of any existing medical conditions in the event of an incident.
