The Long Distance Championships at Balmoral are being planned and controlled by two of the WOC 2015 Long Distance “dream team”, Steve Nicholson and Brian Bullen.

Balmoral Estate was  used for the World Ranking Event at Race the Castles 2014 and the Scottish Orienteering Championships 2016.  Embargoed areas were published in May 2016.  Balmoral Castle is located at grid reference NO253948. Event parking and the race arena will be close to Balmoral Castle itself, with access through the estate.  Thanks go to Her Majesty the Queen and Balmoral Estates for allowing us to use the area and in particular to Garry Marsden, Estate Visitor Enterprise Manager for his great co-operation.  Balmoral is one of the more runnable Deeside forests and does enjoy spectacular views out over the River Dee (and Scottish 6 Day area Glen Feardar) as well as Munros including Lochnagar and Ben Avon.  There are three main hills in the area, the southwest and southeast craggier and rockier.  Many substantial cairns adorn the area, erected in memory of various members of the Royal Family.

British Orienteering Rules apply as well as Competition Rule A: British Long distance Orienteering Championships.

The map was surveyed and drawn by Deeside Orienteering & Leisure Maps (Jon Musgrave) and will be updated to ISOM 2017 specification.  The new International Specification for Control Descriptions will apply.

SPORTident punching will be used.  With the exception of litho printed 1:15,000 scale maps used by the Elite all maps will be laser printed by a BOF accredited printer.

Stay on in Scotland for the Scottish Orienteering Championships over the weekend 26th and 27th May including an extended area by Achagour (Scottish 6 Days 2015) and Relays at Roseisle.
