This event is the inaugural SCOA Sprint Championships, held in the intricate modern Ladygrove housing estate of Didcot, Oxfordshire. Each entrant will run two races, which will be much shorter and with more controls than typical urban events. Your total time will be the sum of your times for the two races.
For those new to orienteering, sprint races are a great introduction to the sport - the navigation is less demanding than for forest events. Even so, the intricate streets of the Ladygrove estate will provide plenty of challenges to keep you on your toes, particularly when taken at speed. Runners in particular should find this event an enjoyable and very different challenge from a road race.
Entry is by class. SCOA members wishing to be competitive in the SCOA Championships should enter their age-class as shown (or run up). Otherwise, then ignore the Class details! Just enter whatever length of course you fancy, by entering Course X Other. If you have been to our some of our Saturday Series events, you will find the navigation in a race like this is no more difficult than an Orange standard course. So if you can do an Orange then just choose the length of course you prefer.
Note though that unaccompanied under 16s must run only course 6 (MJ / WJ) or course 7 (MYJ / WYJ). Course 6 does not cross any of the key routes but does cross minor cul-de-sac roads with almost no traffic. Course 7 does not cross any roads. It stays mostly within the area of the two Ladygrove Hills. Note that several likely routes on this course pass close to two small fishing lakes, and the safety aspect of this should be borne in mind when considering whether to shadow young juniors.
If the short start windows are likely to prove challenging for anyone shadowing juniors, please contact the organiser and we will do our best to accommodate you.
Lengths shown below are the combination of the optimum distance in the two races. Distances are estimates subject to final controlling. The area is essentially flat except for two 10-metre high man-made hills which are partially climbed by some courses, particularly the junior courses.
