Over the last 27 years the SWRC May Flyer sportive has established itself as one of the longest running cycling events in the UK. First run in 1999, this not-for-profit event (all profits from the event are distributed to local charities) has steadily grown in popularity with hundreds of cyclists enjoying their trip through the lanes of Surrey and Sussex. For the last few years, event HQ has been in Cobham, Surrey and for 2026 the riders will again be able to choose between two scenic yet challenging routes: 100 kilometres, or 100 miles.
Free refreshments, musical entertainment, electronic timing, and on course mechanical support have all combined to make the May Flyer an enjoyable and popular Sportive, added to which all profits from the event have been donated to very deserving local charities.
The Flyer 100km route meanders around the North Downs while the 162km Flyer Challenge crosses the North Downs on the way to Amberley in Sussex before returning along a different set of mainly country lanes. Both rides are challenging, and the routes cross the picturesque climbs of Staple Lane, Coombe Bottom, and Pitch Hill, and follow the beautiful, quiet, country lanes of Surrey and West Sussex.
Both routes start and finish from Cobham Village Hall, Lushington Dr, Cobham KT11 2LU
We encourage cyclists, where practicable, to take public transport to the event or cycle. There is, however, plentiful car parking space at Holly Hedge car park just around the corner – it's huge and usually empty. There is a parking charge on Sundays.
Sign on from 08:00, with a rolling start from 08:30 in small groups of 20 riders. The latest time that riders can set off is 09:30.
Entries are limited to 500 riders.
Entries will be accepted on the day at the event with cash or card payment of £40
There will be a timing chip check at the start and finish.
Refreshments will be available at two feed stations and at the beginning and end of the event. There will be sandwiches, homemade cakes and hot drinks, including catering for gluten free, vegetarian and vegan diets. There is mechanical backup around the course, and there will be a SAG wagon to pick up any riders as necessary.
Both routes will be fully marked with arrows on the tarmac, together with our traditional distinctive yellow sign boards.
Emergency contact details will be sent to all riders by e-mail in advance of the event. Cyclists are strongly reminded that they are responsible for their own and other cyclists' safety at all times. Please remember this is not a race, but riders completing the course for their own satisfaction.
The provisional routes have been devised but are subject to change and final details will be sent out a week before the event.
However, the provisional routes can be viewed and downloaded here:
