The Simon Wake Comrie Hills Relay is a 43k relay race with 1,733m of ascent, run in 4 stages (1 runner per stage) starting and finishing in Comrie village. The race follows a route up and around the hills on either side of beautiful Glen Lednock. There are Legs to suit everyone: Legs 2 and 3 cover rough mountain terrain, while Legs 1 and 4, although challenging, are closer to trail races. Leg 1 is fully marked and leg 4 is partially marked. We will also be marking a small section of Leg 3 (across the featureless moor prior to CP6) to reduce risk of lost runners.

  • Race start at 1000 hrs.
  • All Checkpoints must be visited in turn. To avoid the dreaded DQ for your whole team, make sure your race number is clearly visible to checkpoint marshals as you pass!
  • Mass starts. In the interests of our marshals out on the course there are likely to be mass starts at 12.30pm and 1.45pm for teams not reaching set times on Legs 3 and 4 respectively.
  • Race numbers and electronic "dibbers" (one per team to be used as relay baton) to be collected at registration from 0830 on the day.
  • Toilets and (basic) showers available in the pavilion at Laggan Park, as in previous years. There is also a portaloo near to the Leg 2/Leg 3 handover.
  • Parking is only permitted at Laggan Park (start/finish) and Invergeldie (leg 2/3 handover).
  • A minibus shuttle service will operate non-stop throughout the race between Comrie (junction of A85 and the glen road) leg 1/2 handover, leg 2/3 handover and leg 3/4 handover (10.30am to 3.00pm - approx 25 min round trip). Please plan on using this to minimize the number of cars on the single-track road up Glen Lednock.
  • Entry costs £52 per team of 4 runners (including booking fee) and includes post-race refreshments*
  • Prizes. Team prizes in the following categories: Open, Women, V40M, V40W and Mixed (2 Women per mixed team). Open and Female Leg Winner prizes.
  • Maximum teams. Entry will be limited to 50 teams. This year, there's no limit on number of teams per club.
  • Minimum Age. All runners must be 18 or older on the day of the race
  • Junior Races. Once again we are planning junior races (free entry) for 6-14 year olds. Entry on the day.
  • Sponsors: Huge thanks to The Meadow Garage in Crieff and Comrie Croft for their ongoing generous support of our race.
  • Landowners: Thanks also to all the landowners in Glen Ledknock who have permitted our race to go ahead again this year

*Vegetarian options will be available, but, unfortunately,  we are unable to accommodate every allergy and dietary requirement. If you have any intolerances or allergens you may wish to bring your own post-race food.

Electronic Timing

Electronic timing using the SportIdent System. Teams will be issued with an electronic "dibber" at the start of the race. Each runner must use their dibber to check in at the end of their legs. The dibber is then handed on to the next runner as the baton. This will ensure precise times are available once your team has reached the finish line at Laggan Park and the dibber's data is downloaded. All dibbers should be returned at the end of the race. NB: There will be a £30 charge for all dibbers that are not returned.

Charity Fundraising

The race is dedicated to the memory of our friend and fellow Harrier Simon Wake who died aged 47 in October 2008 after a short battle with pancreatic cancer. Simon was a keen hill runner and passionate about youth sport. From 2025, any surplus proceeds from the race will support and promote Junior Hill Running in Scotland. This will be split equally between the Scottish Athletics Junior Hill Running initiatives (e.g. the Junior Hill Running League, taster session and training days etc) and supporting the costs of Strathearn Harriers' own active and growing junior section.

Race Legs are:

  1. 11.2k, 386m ascent – route marked.
  2. 6.9k, 426m – unmarked.
  3. 13.6k, 666m – unmarked (apart from a small section to guide you to checkpoint 6).
  4. 11.5k, 253m – marked

Legs 2 and 3 cover rough mountain terrain, while Legs 1 and 4 are challenging trail routes.

Rules and Safety

Please make sure you read the Race Rules and Safety Guidance before entering. By entering the race you agree to the Race Rules and Safety Guidance, and will ensure that all runners in your team are also fully aware of them before the race. The safety and well-being of runners and marshals are top priorities.

All leg 2 and 3 runners must carry safety equipment including: map, compass, whistle, waterproof jacket and trousers, hat and gloves. There will be kit checks on these legs. NB: In bad weather, this safety equipment may also be required on legs 1 and 4 too so please make sure all runners bring this kit along.
