All are welcome to TAY's latest local event, which is arranged to tie in with the annual junior Jamie Stevenson Trophy competition (JST). This is being run on the same day, so this is a good chance for everyone to try the courses out once the juniors have finished their race. Juniors who want to enter the JST should use a specific entry form directly via your club, who will have received details separately.
The Hill of Alyth is one of TAY's best areas, with extensive views over Strathmore and north towards the Grampian hills. It was remapped in 2024 when is was used for the Scottish Middle Distance Championships, and has a wealth of tricky contoured areas, and a labyrinth of thick gorse patches, giving a real navigation challenge in places. Courses will also make use of the extensive path network to give route choice, and offer suitable courses for newcomers and those wanting to avoid rougher running.
Car parking will be in farmers' fields, and there will be £3 charge- please bring cash on the day. The assembly arena will be set up around the finish area, which is approximately 15 minutes uphill walk from the car parking. Starts are a further 10 minute uphill walk from assembly. Toilets will be available on the walk from the car park to assembly.
Please note that Hill of Alyth can be exposed if the weather is inclement so dress appropriately. Cagoules will be mandatory if the forecast is unkind!
Dogs must be kept on a lead at all times please.
If you are not sure which is the best course for you the following guidance should help:
Yellow is the easiest course and all on tracks and paths. It is good for younger/ primary age children accompanied by an adult or younger children who are regular orienteers.
Orange is great for adult beginners and more confident youngsters ( age 12 plus).
Light Green is for those with some orienteering and navigation experience but a less physical course.
Green and Blue are for experienced navigators and regular orienteers.
The start block is between 12.30pm and 1.30pm, to follow immediately after the last starters in the main junior competition. You can start at anytime within that period.
The Hill of Alyth is popular with dog walkers and the occasional mountain bikers so please take care and be considerate to other users.
