Ord Hill. Inverness Schools Orienteering League and Level D event.
Welcome to the final event of the 2025 INVOC School league. We offer you a pleasant afternoon of orienteering, just to the north of Inverness with a range of courses to suit all ages and abilities including beginners. Help and advice available for newcomers.
Terrain: Ord Hill overlooks the Moray Firth just across the Kessock Bridge from Inverness. It has beautiful, open mixed forest with a fine network of paths and tracks around the tumbled remains of an Iron Age Fort.
Planners comments: Ord Hill has varied terrain with a mix of open woodland and areas of dense forest. There is a good path network. The summit of Ord Hill and the broad ridge leading to it lie along the centre of the woodland and so all courses will involve some ascent and descent but courses are towards the short end of the distance range in recognition of this. The terrain is however not too technical, meaning it is ideal for the easier courses. A Short Green has been provided for those who relish the mental challenge without being too physically taxed.
Map: Pre-marked and printed on waterproof paper, scale 1:5000 with 5m contour interval
Course details: Approximate lengths and climb, subject to final planning
Colour | Length | Climb |
White | 1.6km | |
Yellow | 2.0 km | |
Orange | 2.5km | |
Light Green | 3.2km | 150m |

Green | 4.1km | 265m |

Directions: Directions: From Inverness – just north of the Kessock Bridge take the slip road signposted N.Kessock/Drumsmittal. At the roundabout take the 3rd (Drumsmittal/Kilmuir) exit and pass under the A9. Take the next left signed Drumsmittal/Kilmuir and follow that road until you come to a converted schoolhouse “Lewis Recordings”. Take the right turn here, signed Kilmuir, and follow this road round a sharp left bend. 50m after the bend on the right hand side is the entrance to the car park via a forest track.
Travelling southbound on the A9 take the exit signposted for Kilmuir and Drumsmittal just before the Kessock Bridge and follow the directions as above.
Parking: Schools arriving by car/minibus will be parked in the Forestry & Land Scotland car park (directions above). Grid Reference NH656487. Respect local residents – there is a house at the end of the forest track - please do not block access.
Toilets: There are limited toilet facilities - a portaloo will be available in the Forestry & Land Scotland car park area. There are public toilets in North Kessock and in the layby on the southbound carriageway of the A9.
Registration: Registration (dibber and map collection) and download will be located close to the Forestry & Land Scotland car park. The route to the start will be signposted from the car park.
Start: The start is approximately 250m from the registration/download area. The route will be taped.
Finish: The finish is approximately 50m from the registration area, close to the Forestry & Land Scotland car park. All runners MUST return to download.
School pupils should take jacket/extra fleeces to the start/registration area as they may have to wait around for other team members to return from their courses. Once at the start you can set up a base for your group (for jackets, water bottles, etc).
School packs should be collected from Registration. Ensure each child is assigned the correct dibber. Please also ensure that the wrist cord is used as there will be a charge of £30 to replace any lost dibbers. Each participant will receive a printout of their times at the Finish. Please return all dibbers at the finish.
Start Times: Start times for schools will be between 3.45pm and 4.45pm, so all school groups should have completed their courses by 5:45pm at the latest. Starts will remain open for non-school competitors until 6:15pm.
Courses close promptly 7.15pm
First Aid: The first aid point is at registration. The nearest A&E department is at Raigmore Hospital, Inverness.
Safety: All participants MUST report to download, even if they have not finished their course.
It is recommended that all junior competitors should carry a whistle. Six short blasts indicate a competitor in trouble, anyone hearing this signal is asked to offer assistance. Stout footwear is advised ie. fell shoes/trail shoes/trainers with good grips. In case of bad weather please dress appropriately. Competitors may be advised to wear a waterproof jacket.
Please note that Ord Hill is a popular venue for walkers – you should respect other forest users. All participants should follow the principles of the Scottish Outdoor Access Code during this event (https://www.outdooraccess-scotland.scot)
