The Glen Rosa Horseshoe race is a Category AL Scottish hill race covering a distance of 20km with a total climb of 1670m.
The race was started in 1989 by local hill runner Dave Freeman who wanted to create a hill race on Arran with minimum tarmac which challenged competitors to navigate four of Glen Rosa’s summits in a clock wise loop.
The race fell by the way side in 2015 due to unforeseen circumstances but has been resurrected for 2025.
Runners entering the race must have run a minimum of two similar races and be able to navigate the route sufficiently in bad weather conditions.
There will be checkpoints at various locations on the hill that all runners must visit plus cut off times to be aware of but the race is mostly unmarked, running on heather and granite.
Further details with grids of check points/route map will be sent out to all competitors prior to race day.
The race starts at 12 noon from the Rangers centre field at Brodick Castle Country Park.
Registration will be open on the day from 10 - 11.30am at the same location.
We strongly advise all competitors to come on foot ( 35 min walk along fisherman’s walk from ferry) or by bike or bus if at all possible but if that isn’t feasible then there is parking at the wine port( Goatfell) car park ( get there early) and the Rangers centre field is a short 10 min walk from there.
Unfortunately there are no showers provided at the race field but there are some lovely fresh water pools nearby for an after run dook!
The race is insured and licensed through SHR.
All competitors must carry appropriate kit ( including map and compass) and follow SHR rules.
Trophies will be awarded to the 1st Male and 1st Female Overall and to the 1st Local Male and 1st Local Female
Medals will be awarded to the following categories
1st Male V40/ 1st Female V40
1st Male V50/1st Female V50
1st Male V60/1st Female V60
1st team back ( 3 runners of same team - Male or Female)
Prizes are all locally sourced and sponsorship has kindly been provided by our local outdoor shop Arran Active.
It’s advisable to book your ferry as early as possible to avoid disappointment.
There are ferries from Ardrossan, Troon and for those coming from up North the wee ferry from Claonaig to Lochranza is also available ( non bookable but regular)
Summer timetables available at www.calmac.co.uk
There’s a great campsite in Glen Rosa itself for those staying the night before but also plenty quieter spots around the Island for responsible wild camping.
