Mills n Moors Series

Join us as we connect the varied 'off-road' tracks that radiate from the Piece Hall in Halifax out into the Luddenden Valley and the Upper Calder Valley.

Luddenden Valley is a unique steep sided valley with no 'through road' as we take a bridleway through the old gate house of Castle Carr and onto flowing green lanes and onto the numerous tracks and lanes that link to Halifax.

 - 'blue' grade route at 35km / 640 meters of climbing

 - 'red' grade route at 56km / 1000 meters of climbing and

 - 'black' grade route at 70km with a total elevation of 1,400 meters!

Maps of each route are on the website: https://yorkshiredivide.co.uk/mills-n-moors-series

Highlights include:

  1. Over the only mountain col in West Yorkshire accessed by a bridleway
  2. Climb the longest continuous bridleway in Calderdale
  3. Enjoy the bridleway through Castle Carr gatehouse in Luddenden Valley a unique place with no through road
  4. Zip along four quality gravel tracks are linked together below Midgley Moor
  5. Cross over the packhorse bridge and along Crimsworth Dean, a stunning National Trust managed valley
  6. Tough climb up to the ‘House of Muck’ with a long descent into Hebden Bridge as a reward
  7. The long ‘black’ route takes riders up Cragg Vale and onto moorland singletrack at Manshead
  8. Return to the finish line at Cycle Gear in Halifax (to enjoy hot homemade soup and bread rolls) via the traffic free canal towpath

This is our first ride of 2025 and so we have a new event badge, tea / coffee / cakes at the start line and hot homemade soup at the finish line at our event hub which is Cycle Gear on Horton Street in Halifax.

The Event Hub

  • The event hub is at Cycle Gear, an independent bike shop in Halifax

  • The start line is at the front of the shop at 68 Horton Street, HX1 1QE

  • Register in the shop on Sunday between 8am - 10am

  • Any gravel bike / mountain bike / E-bike is welcome and would get you around the route

  • The start line is 1 minute from Halifax train station

The routes

  • Each route starts by riding past Halifax Minster and over to Pule Hill, onto Ogden then Luddenden.
  • We don't climb Old lane like on the December route which is bonus, opting to take a lane up to Claremount
  • It is a self-guided ride with no way markings saying ‘Mills n Moors route’

  • You will receive all three gpx route files in the week leading up to the event

  • Its your choice which route to ride as any type of bike is fine on each route - gravel bike, e-bike, mtb.

  • The ‘blue’, ‘red’ and ‘black’ refers to how strenuous the trail is by distance and elevation and not by how rough the tracks are.

  • Minimum age of 12 years old when accompanied by a parent / guardian

  • Halifax is ‘car park’ town with 700+ car parking spaces /  £1 all day parking / Map on the website: www.yorkshiredivide.co.uk

On the day

  • Enjoy a relaxed tea / coffee / biscuits / home made cakes inside the bike shop BEFORE your ride

  • Hot soup and bread rolls back at the bike shop AFTER your ride

  • Comfy sofa and chairs to relax in after your ride
  • Pick up your embroidered cloth badge inside the shop (new colours for 2025)

  • Toilet facilities inside the shop

  • Head off when you're ready as there is no ‘mass start’

  • A list of kit that you should carry is on the website: www.yorkshiredivide.co.uk
