Mills n Moors Series

Join us as we connect the varied 'off-road' tracks that radiate from the Piece Hall in Halifax out into the Luddenden Valley and the Upper Calder Valley.

Luddenden Valley is a unique steep sided valley with no 'through road' and is noted for having no electric pylons as its a conservation area.

For us as riders the valley is steep sided and heavily wooded along the north slope where we take a bridleway through the old gate house of Castle Carr and onto past Bobs Tearoom.

It's a delight to ride a gravel bike or mtb along this flowing green lane and onto the numerous tracks and lanes that link to Halifax.

As with very Mills n Moors event there are three routes on offer:

 - 'blue' grade route at 35km / 660 meters of climbing

 - 'red' grade route at 56km / 1000 meters of climbing and

 - 'black' grade route at 74km with a total elevation of 1,500 meters!

Maps of each route are on the website: https://yorkshiredivide.co.uk/mills-n-moors-series

This is our first ride of 2025 and so we have a new event badge, tea / coffee / cakes at the start line and hot homemade soup at the finish line at our event hub which is Cycle Gear on Horton Street in Halifax.

The Event Hub

  • The event hub is at Cycle Gear, an independent bike shop in Halifax

  • The start line is at the front of the shop at 68 Horton Street, HX1 1QE

  • Register in the shop on Sunday between 8am - 10am

  • Any gravel bike / mountain bike / E-bike is welcome and would get you around the route

  • The start line is 1 minute from Halifax train station

The routes

  • Each route starts by riding past Halifax Minster and over to Pule Hill, onto Ogden then Luddenden.
  • We don't climb Old lane like on the December route which is bonus, opting to take a lane up to Claremount
  • It is a self-guided ride with no way markings saying ‘Mills n Moors route’

  • You will receive all three gpx route files in the week leading up to the event

  • Its your choice which route to ride as any type of bike is fine on each route - gravel bike, e-bike, mtb.

  • The ‘blue’, ‘red’ and ‘black’ refers to how strenuous the trail is by distance and elevation and not by how rough the tracks are.

  • Minimum age of 12 years old when accompanied by a parent / guardian

  • Halifax is ‘car park’ town with 700+ car parking spaces /  £1 all day parking / Map on the website: www.yorkshiredivide.co.uk

On the day

  • Enjoy a relaxed tea / coffee / biscuits / home made cakes inside the bike shop BEFORE your ride

  • Hot soup and bread rolls back at the bike shop AFTER your ride

  • Comfy sofa and chairs to relax in after your ride
  • Pick up your embroidered cloth badge inside the shop (new colours for 2025)

  • Toilet facilities inside the shop

  • Head off when you're ready as there is no ‘mass start’

  • A list of kit that you should carry is on the website: www.yorkshiredivide.co.uk
